Office Chair
Hey guys,
I'm REALLY in need of a great office chair but I can't afford the high end ones that run $1000 or more. What can I find in an 8 hour-a-day rated chair for the $250 range? I often spend 10+ hours in the seat when it is dissertation time, so I need something with adjustability, and something that supports lumbar and legs well. Shoot away -- I'll even check out good used quality stuff if its out there. Thanks! |

I don't remember the name of the store, but I've driven by it a dozen times. It's just outside of downtown Columbus, Ohio. National used furniture or some thing like that. Any way I can see in thier windows beautiful chairs and desks and quality office furniture. Their sign states something about repo's and forclosure buyouts and other business type deals. I always figured after seeing this, every major city has sure got to have something like it. May be nothing, but it maybe what your looking for. It's just a thought.

Look at your local warehouse club - Sam's, Costco, etc.

I'm not sure in America, but over here we have a store called Officeworks which usually has some decent stuff, especially when they have a big sale

Have you gone to any of the 187 stores near you that sell office chairs and sat in any of them?

Any office supply store will probably have a pretty wide selection.

I recommend a Google search on ergonomic chairs. They start around the price range you cited and will do you much better than some non-ergo chair that doesn't have the kind of adjustability that will help you, but maybe has "rich Corinthian leather" and has a similar price without functionality.

I have a chair I got from Staples for $100 that I've been using for the past 4 or 5 years now. Granted, it's showing some wear and tear, but it's fairly decent as cheap, high back office chairs go.

I have a very comfortable leather high-back chair from Staples that was originally $220. It's not the most adjustable, but it fits my body like a glove as-is. The only thing I would change about it would be to add a bit of padding to the seat part. It has also held up much better than my mom's expensive ultra-adjustable chair that she got a couple years before I got mine.
I got mine in 2002 or thereabouts. Unfortunately, I saw that they clearanced it out and discontinued it in mid-2005.

I cant imagine spending $1000 for an office chair unless one is concerned that somebody might turn it upside down and discover (gasp) that it is not a designer chair.
There are plenty of very comfortable and very nice looking chairs for under $200. Do what I do when I buy an expensive item....go see it in person at a brick and mortar store and then order it on the internet for a fraction of the brick and mortar price.

Thanks guys...
I've worn out one from Sam's Club. I am currently using a Staples Exectutive leather manager's chair and it flat sucks. I can't even make a couple hours sitting in it. The reason I'm asking is that a lot of chairs feel really good when you first sit in them -- but after 3-4 hours, they start to hurt, make your arms go numb, lock up the back, etc. Office Depot rates all their chairs for the length of duty that they're built for, which is helpful. I'm definitely looking for the 8 + hour chair, as anything under that typically doesn't do it for me anymore. It may be my size, my body shape, my age, etc., but I need good -- without laying out the big bux. Best for me so far (borrowing) is the Herman Miller Aeon, but that is one of those $1000 type chairs and far out of my reach. I've seen them on eBay for under $500, but the shipping often adds another hundred or so to the total. Just thought that someone might actually have a brand name that worked well. Guess you guys are younger than I -- when I was in my 20s and 30s any chair worked -- now that I've passed the 50 mark, not so much...

i'm in my 20's and i can't use just any chair.
i plan on going to several stores and just sitting in there for a few hours to make sure if feels just right. i also find that having something to kick my feet up on helps too when just surfing the internet.

Update...
Well, I finally settled on a new chair. I got the Office Depot branded mesh chair.
It is working out very well -- not quite what some of the big $$$ chairs are, but so far so good. I can sit it for 6+ hours and not die, which is a huge improvement over what I had going before. http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?...%206&An=browse I coulldn't see much difference between this chair and the more expensive Ergo-Human line other than the tags and price... |
