smokin Something Interesting on Flickr

Today while looking at other people pictures on Flickr I came across this :
http://flickr.com/photos/siusun/

It looks like some kind of Japanese (I think it's Japanese?) version of what Americans would do at a Star Trek Convention (Like dress up as Klingons). After looking at this a bit closer I do see Darth Vader so it is some kind of convention and I think the other characters are from video games? Does anyone here on PCMech know exactly what kind of convention this would be?

It does look a little neat....Ok the nerd in me is starting to show.

It's called 'cosplay', short for costume play. It's all the rage in Japan.

Kinda looks like fun. Don't know if I'd do it... heck, I don't even "dress up" for Halloween anymore, but that's more of a time and money issue for that sort of thing.

Many of the characters that the people are dressing up as come from manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese cartoons). The Japanese youth have been doing this for ages.

Thanks I thought I was correct about that and I did notice it was 99.9 percent young people doing this, which is better than some of the American Star Trek Conventions you see on TV from time to time.
