That Compaq Rocks
Had a chance to try a customers' new Compaq today. Had a P4 and that sucker smoked; was really snappy. Just going through same applications I use at home was no comparison. Wouldn't want a Compaq, though
. First chance ever had to try something besides a Gateway PII-450 and my TBird 900. Couldn't believe it was no contest...

Temptation overtook me. Guy had it running next to where I was working on his line, we were shooting the bull about pc's, etc. Offered to let me test drive - what could I say? Left an hour later and only charged him for 15 minutes

So, when will the parts for your system upgrade arrive?

Well, I'm more confused than before. I'd rather run my own "benchmarks", try before buy. We do it with cars and shoes. Here I go - Intel vs. AMD.

What kind of AMD 900? old Duton? Old non T-bird Athlon?
When you compare a T-bird 1.4 or even Athlon XP to a P4, I think the best is still the T-bird 1.4, because of price. Sure, that P4 is high prefromnace, but also hih cost. An Athlon XP is too new, so you would have to wait to buy one. But do you really need the amazing preformance of a 2GHz P4 for running MS word? Logan |

Yea, $105 for the T-Birt 1.4, $110 for the P4 1.4, that $5 could get you a All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500 64Mb DDR

While Hal, wha I have to say about that:
Your comparing the top T-bird to the oldest P4 and yet the oldest P4 is still just a bit more expesive. But I will admit it has ben a while since my lasst price check. Logan |

Who cares if 1.4 GHz T-Bird is the top of the line and 1.4 GHz P4 only the first model of the P4 series ? It's 1.4 GHz vs. 1.4 GHz. Logical, isn't it ? RJ

But AMD has proven, clock speed don't mean a thing anymore. That 1.4 T-Bird rocks the P4's world.

Didn't mean to start another (in a long line) squabble between Intel and AMD. That's akin to Ford vs. Chevy. Never had a chance to try a pc before buying before, so always bought what was considered a top of the line at the time; this Gateway PII-450 and one I built, TBird 900. Toyed with the Compaq and couldn't help but notice the difference in mine. Wouldn't want that brand myself, but the innards was doing all the performing.
