How does windows do drivers?

Ok I wasn't sure where to post this so I thought i'd post it here.

I was wondering how windows installs drivers for hardware? Like how it installs drivers from windows on different things. Are these drivers on windows and are they just generic drivers? (say if i installed a network card and i used the windows drivers, are they drivers for any network card or this specific one?) Or am I completely wrong? I always wondered about the drivers windows wanted to install automatically.

Microsoft adds a bunch of drivers for 'common' hardware to Windows releases, but they're only current as of that release, so you'll probably want to get updted versions.

The only ones I've ever used for any length of time that I can think of off the top of my head are a few NIC drivers included with Win2000.

My understanding was that the drivers came from the original manufacturer. ie: HP sends drivers for an HPIIP printer to Microsoft and Microsoft includes it with the OS. In the case of an HPIIP [there is also a more common HPIID], on HP's website, it states that the drivers on the win98 CD are the most recent for that printer.
