GLC, If it gets the job done, it's OK. And for all the Newbies that are worried about computer parts failing or lifespans of the parts or even how much speed do I need. Pay attention to the make-up of the machines.

The one that sits in the corner:

MidWest Micro (I believe)
Intel 486DX 33MHz
Same Turbo LED just to let you know how slow you are going
4 x 8MB SIMMs (upgrade from original)
Terribly old SoundBlaster ISA
1MB Stealth something Video Card (extremely expensive for its day)
3.5 Floppy
5.25 Floppy
Slow CD-ROM (4x? upgrade from original)
256MB Hard-drive or thereabouts
Dusty Keyboard
15" Monitor
Panasonic "Quiet" Dot Matrix (I think the "quiet" part is a joke)
Crappy desktop speakers

Cost in its day ~$3500
======================

The one that replaced the one that sits in the corner, but now shares that corner:

Toshiba Brand
Intel Pentium 166MHz
Proprietary Motherboard
2 x 64MB RAM (Upgrade)
Onboard Sound
Onboard Video (S3 Verge)
3.5 Floppy
Not quiet so slow CD-ROM (12/16x? Never checked it)
2 GB Matrox Harddrive
Very nice keyboard which I still use
17" MidWest Micro Monitor
BJC-600e Bubble Jet Printer
Same crappy desktop speakers

Cost in its day ~1000 w/o monitor (Not too bad)
===============================================

The one that replaced the one that replaced the one that sits in the corner, and still does stuff. My first good build:

HBC
Intel Pentium II 450MHz
Asus P2B-L Motherboard
Inwin Q500 Full Tower Case
2 x 128 MB PC100 RAM (state of the art, I might add)

52x Delta CD-ROM
8 Gig Western Digital Caviar
Clickety keyboard

=====================

Newest System and current favorite waste of money:

HBC
AMD Athlon 1.2 AXIA Thunderbird Core
Epox 8K7A Motherboard
Enlight 7237 Case
2 x 256 MB PC2100 RAM
SoundBlaster Live! Gold
Gainward CardExpert GeForce3 with VIVO / DVI
3.5 Floppy (hard to shake that one)
4x2x32x Sony Re-Writable
Internal ATAPI Iomega Zip Drive
Intel InBusiness 10BaseT/100BaseTX PCI NIC
40 Gig IBM 60GXP 7200 RPM
Old Toshiba keyboard
21" IBM P260 Trinitron Monitor
HP 960c DeskJet Printer
Same Bose Accoustamass Speaker Set

Cost in its day ~$1400
======================

Looking at all that makes me depressed, what a waste. My first computer that I really used aside from those really old calculators that they have in the Smithsonian, was an AppleIIe. It was amazing what you could program for that thing. Graphics were bad, but people were much more inventive back then. That 486 was great. It was the most amazing computer of its time. Favorite games: Prince of Persia and Gunship 2000. All mine have run DOS, then Windows 3.1, then Windows 95, then Windows 98 FE. Will hopefully be getting XP for Xmas. As for the rest of the family, I do not know the specs of their computers / laptops.

Respectfully,

Demosthenes

P.S. Skipped over that the first time, mc2phat: "Sleezegates". Where can I find one?

The correct spelling is "sleaze." I like the incorrect manner of spelling, as it reminds one of the two "e"'s in "cheese." I have a few dead ones in a box in the attic.

Cricket - why have you chosen your favorite as the 400MHz PII over a better spec machine (your new system that you don't use much)?
Just generally curious if there is a good reason.

dj4uk-I'm not a gamer, so raw speed isn't that important to me. The PII 400 was the first system I put together where I actually knew what I was doing (sentimental value?). It does everything I need it to do, is very stable (iBX440 chipset) and it's been a real trooper. Built in 1998.

The Pentium 233 was my first actual build, but I didn't know what I was doing at the time. I was really surprized when it started on the first try. I learned a lot about troubleshooting with this PC...haha...but it was big improvement over the 100 MHz Packard Bell we bought in 1995. Built in 1997.

The PIII 1 GHz was built earlier this year...I guess I just wanted to be able to say I own a 1 Gig PC...own, but don't use much...haha...I use it mostly for burning music CD's and doing a little photo editing. It will eventually take over as the main PC, but I don't know when.

Cricket - so its just sentimental attachment then - I thought you knew something I didn't
If it stable I don't blame you sticking with it - a PII 400 will do the majority of things. As you say burning CDs and photo editing may need the extra bit of processing power.
