$200 - What can you buy??
1. EPOX 8K7A mobo and Athlon 1.2
2. SOYO K7V Dragon, heatsink and take wifey to dinner. 3. AMD XP 1600 and take wifey to dinner. 4. HP Deskjet 940c, 128mb PC133 ram (Corsair), take wifey to dinner. 5. IBM 40gb hard drive, 256mb PC133 ram (Corsair), take wifey to dinner. 6. 8 copies of PC Mechanic CD (great stocking stuffers), wifey to dinner. 7. Windows XP. Wifey stays home and fixes grilled cheese sandwiches.. To me, it's a no-brainer.

Carl, no, I was just comparing what one could get compared to Windows XP. Actually, I have more than $200 to spend, but can't decide on the ingredients for wifey's new pc.

It's software and software is a big part of the expense of having a computer ... be it for personal or for business use. Imagine a business considering this change! XP, you better be good.
Hey SARGE, when it's put that way, the first choices seem like a much better deal ... but we're comparing apples and oranges here. The same could be said about a number of products. I suppose if we had all the hardware needed, it wouldn't be so bad getting XP and staying home with wifey ... but that would never happen [the part about getting all the harware needed]. I hear you loud and clear though ... $2 bills is a lot to pay for an OS. In a way, I would like to see a low demand for this product so that the price would drop a bit. It just seems expensive to switch over to XP, considering how many people have more than one computer nowadays ... and considering what an OS cost in the past [XP home ver costs approx 15% more than ME] ... or is that just inflation.

What is XP - Xtra Profit?
Before you upgrade get a pen and paper and write down the cost of all your old windows versions and look at the total. Now do the same with unused computer hardware. OK. Now you know you can afford to spend the $200 on just about anything - even repeat your past mistakes. ![]() BTW, will your system be able to run XP......No problem just upgrade your hardware and you will be fine. |

Bob, I try to avoid looking into my closet, except to grab a floppy. There are copies of McAfee, old Norton anti-virus and utilities, copies of "Dummies", How to understand Win95, How to understand DOS, Inside the IBM computer, not to mention games that kiddos "just had to have" and collecting dust, old keyboards, modems (28.8 and boy, were they fast), versions of Win 3.1, Win95, Win98, Win98se, old video cards, yada yada yada. Must have a fortune in there and probably couldn't get $100 for all of it.
But then, I think of all the $$$ I've paid for car insurance and life insurance through the years. I ain't pushing up daisies yet, so I'd like a refund Ain't had a wreck in 28 years, and figured that cost me $50k in premiums.Win XP looks cheap
