Flamefest Time

It happens every once in a while ... a comment is made that for one reason or another, is taken out of context by other[s] where they may read too much into it. From there a thread takes a life of it's own and soon becomes a ground for endless bickering. and the original topic is forgotten. Of course, being unproductive, the thread may at times be closed.

It's important to keep these considerations in mind:
*Be nice towards other members. We are all here to learn from one another.
*Don't take things personally. Comments that may appear to be aimed specifically at a person may not have been addressed to that member in an ill-spirited manner, if at all.
*Don't start flames/fights/personal attacks/whatever you want to call it.
*Be forgiving and move on.
*Get a thicker skin and a sense of humour.

I quote an esteemed colleague with some slight edits to make it more universal:

quote:

You folks are obviously aware that this site means and its whole end is to allow users to offer their own views and solutions to most any situation.
Therefore, this site CANNOT allow flagrant attacks by ANY user.
Please keep this civil. The world has its fair share of problems and we needn't start new problems here. We all gather to share experience. Some are more experienced then others and some attack a problem in a differing way.
Tossing insults does nothing but degrade experiences on this site and makes the one who does the insulting look quite bad and lose trust with readers.
Its the sole intent of this site to allow users to post pros and cons of a solution to a given problem. Some solutions work better then others for differing reasons.
Readers are thankful for its content [topics being discussed & information being shared] and the effort made by those that contributed.
Lets drop the suggestions of incompetence and simply "discuss" the issue in a fashion typical for PC-Mech. This is the reason "why" so many boards yern to have the types of readers we have here. Its envy, pure and simple.
Howzaboutit, play nice?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also would like to quote another esteemed member who, like many of us, does not mind being a part of a good debate … questioning some views in a civilized fashion and in a manner that allows views to be shared. This insight is inspiring ...

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like this post. I love stuff that, for a lack of better words, pisses other people off. I am a fan of entropy, too. This like my old arguments class, where we had to construct arguments are refute those of others based on facts. I liked when others shot down everyone of my arguments. I have grown accustomed to throwing my opinions out and not having any sentimental attachment to them. While this makes me somewhat easy to persuade, it allows me to accept criticism (and ultimately abuse) much better than most. Unfortunately, others do not have this trait, and feel hurt when their ideas are tossed back at them. And that is exactly what everyone has done in this thread. I love it! Ah, Memories.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In that thread, the member made these observations in the midst of a somewhat delicate situation and then went on to a question relating to the topic at hand.

It is noticed by this moderator how one behaves in such instances ... whether they antagonize, apologize, contribute, etc. At the same time, I also realize that we can’t all be walking on pins and needles around here. How dull we would be if we all shared the same views. People make mistakes … we all do and I’ll be the first to admit that it happens to me too. While it's regrettable that ‘flamefests’ do occur once in a while, we are fortunate that we have a playground to share ideas and that there are few such incidents here.
So … Howzaboutit, play nice?

Hi archie,

Good post, I hope a lot of the members take the time to read it.

Actually, I find this forum has the most well mannered and knowledgeable members around. I've been to many other forums that have members that aren't very civil and there are trolls just looking to start flame wars (I guess they get their jollies that way). After going from forum to forum these past few years, I only come to the PCMech forum on a regular basis. The atmosphere on this forum is the best and that's the main reason I keep coming back. This site might not have the high traffic as some of the other sites, but it doesn't have the same amount of ill will and nastiness of the others sites either.

The members and moderators here are truly the best on the net and I hope this forum stays this way for a long time.
