Hi guys,
Besides other kinds of music I really enjoy classical music. I recently listened to Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" cd and liked it. Do any of you know of some other composers that composed music like Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana"? If so, what are they? If you don't know what kind of music I'm talking about, it's like the type of music you hear in the beginning of an action movie preview (classical with people singing). Thanks in Advance! |

Hey there Mr.Flopster,
I would suggest Tchaikovsky. While not with the same line as the type you speak, it is still quite powerful to say the least. I perfer Classical to most other muzik unless a good "oldies" station comes about. (oldies= 1960-1975) Todays muzik to me, says nothing. Simple noise. While I don't think opera is your thing but should it be Wagner (Vahgner) is also woth a listen.

Thanks Toaster,
Is there anything you'd recommend by Tchaikovsky in particular (besides the Nutcracker Suite)? TIA. |

Mozart some nice things with vocals. Requiem is the only one that stands out in my mind at the moment. I also grew up with the moldy oldies. But, while I love classical music, I have never really been a fan of vocals. Beethoven's Ninth, later adopted for the Church's use, is another powerful piece. From Tchaikovsky, I have always been a fan of his Piano Concertos, mainly because I always aspired to be that proficient. Needless to say, I never did reach that level. All the powerful classical music is tacky though. It is used in so many advertisements it loses something when you start thinking of Schwarzenegger smashing heads to the classics.
Still, Sinopoli's Great Gates of Kiev is one I can play on piano and has power even for a piano. Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture does not sound quite as convincing as a piano solo, but sounds good orchestrated. Vivaldi is another of my favorites. Lately, I have found soundtracks from Role Playing Games such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and especially Chrono Cross to be absolutely amazing. I never thought games could have that kind of music. The guy here does all his work on a Roland JV-1000. His songs like March of the Seraphim and The Journeys End are excellent for a non professional. Respectfully, Demosthenes |

Hi Demosthenes,
I thought 'The Great Gates of Kiev' was by Mussorgsky.......Emmerson, Lake and Palmer did a great version of it (and of the whole suite) way back when on an L.P. called 'Pictures at an Exhibition'. Look out for it at car boot sales etc. It's easily recognised, the cover is wood panelling with empty picture frames. Chris. |

Yep, it is by Mussorgsky. My dad happened to have a cd of "Pictures from an Exhibition ", I'm listening to it right now. It's really pretty good. By the way Demosthenes, I also checked out that link and listened to some of that guys music, it's pretty good as well. Does anyone know which composers' music is used in previews for action movies etc.? I know Orff is one, but what are some others? TIA.

I stand corrected. I knew that name was not Russian, but it stuck in my head for some reason. Sinopoli must have done the piano translation. Sorry.

Hi Floppy,
I can't say I'm a fan of pure Classical Music, I'm a fan of Deep Purple, and I own a few LPs that you may be interested to hear: DEEP PURPLE "Concerto For Group And Orchestra"
Also, if you like "Rock meets Classical": Uli Jon Roth There are releases from former Scorpions/ Electric Sun guitarist Uli Jon Roth. Its very interesting "Symphonic Rock for Europe". Trans-Siberian Orchestra I don't have any links for now, but you there are good work by former YES keyboard player RICK WAKEMAN. |

Hi Gintaras,
These sound interesting, is there any place online where I could listen to them? Also, I like rock and classical together as well.(e.g. Metallica's S&M cd, Led Zeppelins "Kashmir" etc.). TIA. |

Dunno where you could hear samples.
Prolly, it would be easier for me to make a copies on the tape for you(I Just have no idea how long it would take for me). Dunno or you can get anything from above via WinMX(you might try). There is a band called RHAPSODY- "Metal meets Classical", I have a few songs from Napster times. |
