Name That Bug
Hey Everybody,

I took this picture in my front yard on Sunday. It turned out really well so I'm thinking of sending it into Missouri Conservationist to see if they will publish it. Before I do that though, I would like to identify this bug. Any help would be appreciated.

Beautiful image! What camera are you using?

I would take a wild guess and say its a grasshopper.

Thanks guys. I took it with my Canon EOS Rebel XT with the kit lens.

I was thinking it was a grasshopper, but it seems too small. Most grasshoppers I have seen have a bigger mid-section.

I think 12twelve12 is right. The mole cricket is a little too big and doesn't have the same antennae. The katydid has the same striped antennae and the back has the same ridges.

Wow, that really is a nice capture, catacon. Composition, color and sharpness are all really good...especially for the kit lens. Do you remember the shooting data? Shooting mode (Basic? Creative? Manual?), f/stop, shutter speed, ISO, white balance and metering mode? And what post-processing program did you use?

Metering Mode: Evaluative metering
Exposure Compensation: 0
ISO Speed: 100
Focal Length: 55.0 mm
Image size: 3456 x 2304
Image Quality: RAW
Flash: Off
White Balance: Auto
AF mode: One-Shot AF

I used Digital Photo Professional (comes with the camera) to do a little sharpening.

Ahh, you shoot in RAW...that explains the image clarity. I find that with my XTi the JPEGs that came out of it weren't that great, so I started shooting in RAW and the difference was amazing. Pictures were much clearer with more detail and better color. I've never used JPEG since.

That really is a very nice capture...very nice.
