Home Heater Question
Our gas heater is in a closet. For some reason I was checking it out and felt of the aluminum pipe that goes from the top of it, thru the attic and comes out the roof. I figure it's the vent for fumes to escape. However, it's very hot to the touch when heater going and when I look outside there is steam coming out of it on roof. Is this supposed to be hot? Seems dangerous since it's going thru the sheetrock. I noticed house across the street has steam coming out of theirs also but can't see other houses doing it. Maybe they're not running their heater? Don't know if I should call someone out.

That's normal venting and the vent tubes do get warm/hot.

It all depends on the furnace manufacturer, age of the appliance and so on and so forth. I used to work for a propane company delivering bulk gas and servicing appliances for clients. If your venting is warm or hot to the touch, that is ok. It is going to happen because that is warm to hot air venting out of it while the heat is on. If the A/C is on, then there is a problem.
As far as steam coming out the vent in the roof, that is normal, depending on the air temperature outside. You are going to see the same things happen to exhaust on cars and trucks when the temperature drops. You should be A-OK Sarge!

Wha wha whaaaaa!!!.... You guys don't know cold LOL.
Sarge, that's normal... heck, I have an ice buildup on mine where it comes out and freezes up right away. Going to a high efficiency furnace actually gets rid of that with an outlet made from ABS pipe that comes out the side of the house... but I highly doubt that you run a furnace often enough down there to justify the cost of a high efficiency furnace.

dangerous. I'd make a quick call to a local plumber or heating professional. You could easily describe the situation and see what they say about it. ---pete--- |
