Another weird one..

Usually the place I live is very hot but it also has it downsides when it's get cold and right now we have a time like this - OH, with cold I mean 11Degrees Celsius at night - anyway got this computer here and as we have windows open at night to cope with the usual heat of 24+degrees a few days back when it started to get cold I left them open as there is no fear of intruders as the windows are sealed with some solid Iron designs which will to keep intruders out -

In the morning I went down to the shop - here the same thing windows open then booting up one the computers just to find out the a Quantum hard drive had given up life - this is the WinXP drive on a triple configuration Win98 and QNX Reat Time OS - shut down the comp to remove the WinXp drive and booted up Win98 to get the work done which had to be done -

Later that day I reconnected the drive onto the test computer just to find it working - reinstalled it into the computer where it belongs too just to find out that infact it works well..and the computer was online all day

Now yesterday morning this has happen again - so when I actually took out the drive of the drive bay it felt really cold - taking my electronic Temp measure equipment and measured the temp - it was +8 Degrees Celsius on the Cover of the hard drive ...

Took the hard drive back to the test computer right then and plugged it in - it wouldn't show in the bios and all I got out of it was the sound of the spinning motor and the tik - tak of the head arm which was looking for the master track ... But not found it ... placing the drive in a more warm envirorement and the drive shows up each time.. now you tell me... isn't this weird???

Sounds like the mechanism inside the harddrive is being temperature sensitve.
Actully a lot of expansion and contraction can take place from cold to warm.
If you ever busted open an old drive these parts are all metal which will definitly expand and contract quite alot unlike other materials.

Another reason not to like Quantum drives.

The drive is just working fine again - as we seldom get low temperatures like this here - Oh BTW no data loss whatsoever..and I can still say I like Quantums.

This is the frist Quantum drive which has failed here in 4 years..

Send a message via ICQ to Gintaras
I think Maxtor now makes Quantum HDDs.

All HDDs I had were Maxtors.
If you need replace faulty one- nothing better than Maxtor does it.

I used FDISK on maxtor drives without any problem - the only Maxtor utility I use is the Low Level Format of them - because it's the most powerfull I ever came across..

I used fdisk. The upgrade on this older HP Pavillion went very smooth.
This is the second Maxtor I have used and they run very quiet.
It did say Quantum on it by the way. This was bought just tonight new at Best Buys. They had the 20 gig for $49.00 I thought what a great price, especially since you get a three year warranty from the manufacturer.

I almost bought one of those yesterday - till I saw "Quantum Fireball by Maxtor" on it - sorry, I just don't trust Quantum drives.

I use the software if I am replacing a drive, because it's very easy to clone the old drive over to it. If I'm doing a fresh install I use fdisk.

For IDE drives, IBM, Fujitsu, and WD. For SCSI drives, Seagate.
