Unhappy Awww man...

That's sooo sad. What about all the other people who believe in Santa Claus and celebrate Christmas. The world is becoming a very strange place to live...

Yeah, I saw that story on the morning news too. Supposedly two Jewish families objectd to Santa Clause. I say the City Council is whackier than the two families as there's no legal basis to have to ban Santa.

I predict we're not hearing the whole story here as it sounds like something else is going on.

Happened in my hometown of Grand Rapids -- years ago they had three holiday displays downtown: Santa Claus at the North Pole, A nativity, and a Jewish menorah. Well, the Santa display and nativity are long gone -- argument was that the menorah was historical, the other two based in 'mythology' and both were considered by the courts as 'non-inclusive'. The case was appealed but the state appeals court and the state supreme court refused to hear the case.

Nice. Thanks ACLU.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. These articles make sensational reading
and sell papers but in fact they're very rare. It's kinda like reading about the damage award in a lawsuit for 2 million bucks for a stubbed toe. Yeah, I've read about, but I've never known a Lawyer who won such an award.

Unhappy

Here in Honolulu there was a large white cross located on a hilltop of a local military reservations. It had been a well known landmark for decades...you could see it from the freeway and it was even lit up at night. Then some government watchdog group said it was improper to have a religous icon on government property. Down came the cross. If we're supposed have separation of church and state, how come all our money says "In God We Trust"?

Solution: move the celebration from government to private funding. I'm more of the opinion that my tax dollars shouldn't pay for ANY celebrations; I would be more than happy to give a few dollars to support celebrations I enjoy.

Many of the best festivals, fairs, etc. are all handled by private groups. The government should not spend tax dollars on religious celebrations; there are more than enough religious organizations, festival committees, etc. which can easily bear this burden. And then, there is no problem with the questionable constitutionality of the government funding certain religious events but not others.
