Spam

as I have been having bouts of insomnia lately, I have been awake at obscene hours of the night and early morning and I have noticed something.

SPAM mailers seem to happen everyday between 545a and 600a (ET). I have zero emails in my in box at 530a and then by 605a I literally have dozens of SPAM items flying into my account.

If I have noticed this, why haven't the ISPs noticed it and figured out a way to block it?

Cause maybe the spam comes in at 705a CST and 905a PST

Have you been going online to your webmail and reporting it as spam?

Spam doesn't bother me. Although I'm still waiting for that check from Nigeria.

The question is, how would a sysadmin account for a time variance in the increase in spam? If it were something like .. maybe tagging even remotely suspicious mails with a higher spamscore, then - I dont think any ISP would be willing to take the risk that there are people sending/receiving legitimate mails even at those hours and face their ire at having mails that they send or receive as spam. Most people dont care to go through their spam folders to look for false positives.
And if an ISP were to create the perfect spam filter that detects and tags spam at those hours, then shouldn't they be working 24x7...

Between my isp's spam filter and the few rules I created in my email program, I would say 95% of it goes directly into my deleted items. I do a quick look/see before I empty that folder, just to make sure something legitimate didn't get bumped.

It also amazes me as to how many dead, or soon to be deceased, people want to give me their money.

Looks like the beginning of a business day. Possibly reoccurances of already inplace settings. More than likely your email is on a few lists.

look at the bottom of the email to unsubsribe. It's usually in small print. some of these have two places to unsubscribe from.

You have to be diligent also. They'll keep coming, and get worse if you don't. It can take up to 2-3 weeks of responding with unsubscribe. Read it also. Some ask to have you put it in the body, others have you put unsubscribe in the subject line. Some are nice and unsubscribe easily and quickly.

Be VERY CAREFUL when you try to unsubscribe. VERY often this will just get you on more spammer's lists. Use your head! The unsubscribe request tells the spammer that the address is valid!

I didn't think of that.
But the process has worked for me. I'm just very careful and make sure I'm clicking on the correct link. I had to do it before, and I'm doing it again. I don't use a spam blocker or folder, I do it manually. Currently I'm down to about 3 or 4 hits a day, about twice a week. One more week and I'll have it eliminated again.

That is, untill I have another brain fart. I was bored and 'thought what the heck', I filled out for the $1000 Walmart gift card. I gave up after about two hours. Of course I wasn't bored any more! Now I'm spending my time cleaning out my email.
