Changing information on audio files ripped from CD in Windows Media Player 8

I got Windows XP home not long ago and every day I discover new nifty things here and there (at the same time discovering at work that many of the nifty things were already in Windows 2000).

These days I have been experimenting with Windows Media Player 8 and its ability to generate audio files from audio CD's in WMA format. I am trying to put song info into the file, such as title, year, etc., and have been unable to do so. Seems like WMP will not let me change this.

How can I do this?

With MP3 files I can do this using Winamp but it won't play WMA files (at least the version I have).

I believe Winamp does have a WMA plug-in, you may want to check NulSoft.

WMA files do not have the same ID characteristics as MP3 files. MP3 ID tags are based on the information generated by CDDB servers and their users. It's a 'open-source' idea -- do you honestly think M$ would have anything to do with anything open-source?

I got the latest version of Winamp and it now plays WMA but still won't let me change the file info.

Bummer! The CD from which I got the songs is not one commercially available and was given away by the city hall (it has several versions of the town song, some of which I intend to include in a web site). I wanted to put all pertinent information in the songs.

Aside from this, the ability to make high quality WMA files from audio CDs, is a very nice thing to have.

Get the MP3 Pro plugin if quality is an issue -- better quality and a smaller file than a comparable WMA file and you can include ID tags. Otherwise, just encode using the MP3 file extension -- more people can use it for heaven's sake. What are you going to do if someone browses your web site using a Mac or Linux box and they don't have those plugins? I don't think the Mac can even play WMA files at all.

Well I don't have XP yet, but what I used to do to make Winamp display the song's name was inserting the CD and creating a playlist enty in the Windows CD Player. Then I closed the CD Player and started MusicMatch Jukebox. MM Jukebox then recognized the tracks and its names with no need to use the CDDB servers. After converting the track to MP3 the names were displayed.

Now that I know that Winamp lets me edit the Files' info I don't do this anymore.
