Just noticed something....(RANT time)

Ya know, this might be a stupid observation, or maybe a revelation. But as I've been traversing the forum tonight (I just can't get to sleep tonight for whatever reason), I've begun to notice something that I am finding more and more irritaitng. There are people on this forum that have signatures longer than most posts. More specs than I really could care about in a lifetime.

More interesting, I have noticed the people that are the most respected and most knowledgeable have simple, sometime cute or humorous signatures, but that's it. They don't have to pat themselves on the back or show the rest of us how cool they are or how deep their wallets are (or their parents wallets in some cases) -- they don't have to make sure we all know they have the biggest or the best.

I guess I want to join the club, so I'm going to spec out my DAW:

Athlon 1.4 T'Bird
ASUS A7V266A
1 Gig 2600 DDRam
1 30 Gig Maxtor 7200rpm ATA100 HDD
4 Quantuum Atlas 36Gig 10000rpm Ultra160 LVD SCSI in RAID 0
Pioneer DVD-R/RW
Yamaha 16x10x40 CD-RW
Pioneer 16X DVD-Rom
ADAT-Edit card running 4 ADAT XT-20s
Tannoy reference monitors (stereo near field)
K*ROK reference monitors (stereo wide field, surround and center)
K*ROK 12" sub
6 QSC 250watt amps
Yamaha O2R recording console, fully automated Via MIDIMan 4 port
Appian Jeronimo Pro video card (quad display)
1 Apple 22" Cinema widescreen Display
2 Sony G520 21" displays
1 Viewsonic 17" display
Linksys 10/100 NIC into Linksys BEFSR81 8 port router, Ameritech 1500DSL
Logitech optical mouse
107 Internet keyboard (generic)
Sony MDS-JE-330 MiniDisk
Sony 59ES DAT
Tascam DA30 MkII DAT Master
Pinnicle DV500 Video capture
Canon XL-1 DV camera
JVC S-VHS VTR
AMPEX pro betamax stereo VTR

There, I feel much better about myself.

Ahhhh....bathing is sarcasam at 3am -- nothing quite like it.

Kool System > Might I ask how much you got into it?
As for the systems in the posts, I feel that it helps give new builders a feel for what type of hardware people use by brand and model. I know when I first started building the big problem was what was the best in the price range I was looking to build. The fact that I could read down the lists, helped a lot.

Phew! Audiyoda, thank god your system specs are not your signature.

To me, a signature is a brief phrase which informs others the way I think, or the way I am.

audiyoda, you read my mind. I was going to make a post yesterday requesting that sigs be limited to a certain length because these huge system spec sigs make reading a thread very hard by having to scroll through pages before reading any content.

No offense meant to any with such a huge sig, but it is somewhat annoying.

OK Craig, you asked for it:

System 1 (mine)= Cely 500
System 2(daughter #1)= Dell P133 (given to me)
System 3(daughter #2)= P233mmx (my old system handed down to said daughter)

BassMaster4000 (son) has got the best system (Cely 850), but he paid for it with his own $$ from working weekends so I can't take credit for that one.

Oh yeah, we're all on a LAN with a 5 port Kingston Hub and 3 NICs I bought from Hackercarlos for $40. (I got the 4th NIC free with System #2)

I have my file server (BX6 R2, 500 mhz) turned away from our monitors, because I don't want it to see some of the sigs and feel inferior. Therapy is quite expensive.

Ya know, when I finally got to bed last night (5am), I though, "damn, I just shot myself in the foot with that post". Never thought others felt the same way.

And morris -- my studio system's worth roughly $60,000 at today's prices. But then again, it's in a audio/video production studio and making money for me. It's not my 'toy' -- my office system is. That one's a bit more conservative

Well I can't speak for everyone, but for alot of us, people on the forums are always asking you for your specs, so instead of typing them over and over and over, it just made sense to include it in the sig. I agree, some of them are a little long, but I also don't feel that most are trying to show who has the biggest and baddest. Maybe I am wrong.

I can see how it could be annoying....

But I'd have to agree with morriswindgate. As a newbie those system posts are my field tests. It's how I find out what's current in reality and not just in the reviews.

After reading the points made I see that it can be helpful to have the specs in the sig. If you do have it though, please put it horizonally and include just the important parts. For example:

Athlon 1.2 GHz | EPoX 8K7A | 256MB DDR | Maxtor 30GB | GeForce 2 MX

DrZaius has the best solution.
These LOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGGGG lists of system components are totally unnecessary in most cases. I don't care if your RAM is Micron or Kingston, what matters more is how much of it. I don't care if your video is 4 meg or 64 meg, but what card/chipset? I don't care if you have 300 systems or just one, the specs of the system you're having trouble with, or the one you are posting with is enough, thanks.

Pam123 makes a great point, but I do get the feeling that a lot of the time people list their system specs just to show off. Of course, there is nothing inherently wrong with showing off. That's what members of the local Corvette Club do every month. It just that listing specs at the end of every post, takes up a lot of space.

I don't list my system specs, 'cause I don't want anybody to laugh. Maybe I should just list the system I'd like to own.

So what you're all saying is that this would be better:

Athlon 1.4 T'Bird
ASUS A7V266A
1 Gig 2600 DDRam
1 30 Gig Maxtor 7200rpm ATA100 HDD
4 Quantuum Atlas 36Gig 10000rpm Ultra160 LVD SCSI in RAID 0
Pioneer DVD-R/RW
Yamaha 16x10x40 CD-RW
Pioneer 16X DVD-Rom
ADAT-Edit card running 4 ADAT XT-20s
Tannoy reference monitors (stereo near field)
K*ROK reference monitors (stereo wide field, surround and center)
K*ROK 12" sub
6 QSC 250watt amps
Yamaha O2R recording console, fully automated Via MIDIMan 4 port
Appian Jeronimo Pro video card (quad display)
1 Apple 22" Cinema widescreen Display
2 Sony G520 21" displays
1 Viewsonic 17" display
Linksys 10/100 NIC into Linksys BEFSR81 8 port router, Ameritech 1500DSL
Logitech optical mouse
107 Internet keyboard (generic)
Sony MDS-JE-330 MiniDisk
Sony 59ES DAT
Tascam DA30 MkII DAT Master
Pinnicle DV500 Video capture
Canon XL-1 DV camera
JVC S-VHS VTR
AMPEX pro betamax stereo VTR

I think I like the good Dr.'s and 'boot's idea. Simple, to the point:
Mobo/chipset | CPU | amount/type (DDR, Rambus, SD) Ram | vidcard | sound card

The rest really makes no difference. The fact that you have X# of HDD's, six CD-RW's, 5 optical mice, 4 NIC's, 3 calling speakers, 2 keyboards and a 500" monitor doesn't help in any way.

Including the floppy drive may not be necessary but the choice of monitor, mouse, CDRW, etc may be useful to some.
Possible solution: keeping the sig down to 5 lines including spaces would provide more than enough info and not cause people to scroll so much.

sys specs

I think Reboot hit it right.

System specs are indeed cool, sometimes I WANT to look at them. But scrolling 72 inches to get past them is a bit much. Reboot, you might use the next larger font, some of us old goats don't see so well, but the format is perfect.

Think I'll try it.
