Question Am I missing something?

Or does crucial.com not carry RDRAM? I tried searching for my model (Dell 8100) and came up with noting. Anynone know if I'm just not finding it?

Hi orcmonkey,

No, Crucial does not carry RDRAM. Since it is proprietary, only certain comapanies (Samsung, I think) are allowed to make the RAM.

Be sure that if you are not purchasing the ram DIRECTLY from Dell or an authorized Dell distibutor that the ram is identical. I have heard that just because it is RDRAM does NOT necessarily mean it will work in your machine. As a previous post said,Dell among others, uses proprietary ram as a means of being sure any future income from ram and other expansion comes to them. A prime example is my IBM computer. I was upgrading to 256MB from 64MB and purchased 2 128MB (256 was out of stock) sticks of Corsair brand memory that matched the specs of the existing 64MB. That IBM would not even POST. If I added the original 64MB to the stack, the machine would boot but only using the 64MB stick. I tried all kinds of speeds and timing and jumper settings and finally returned the new memory (QUITE PISSED) to the store I bought it from. The salesman tried to convince me that that memory worked in IBM and that I must have done something wrong. I love a challenge so I brought the machine to him. Same problem but with a frustrated and embarrassed salesman. Exasperated and desperate, I traded the Corsair for two 128MB Toshiba brand, plugged them into the IBM and POOF! I now had a machine with 320MB of ram! GO figure huh?
