Well finally ...

After a lot of building construction sounds over the holidays the second set of Verizon trucks have just rolled up, we're getting FiOS in my section of the Bronx.

Having been spoiled with DSL since the winter of 2000 and with regular upgrades in speed since then , now at 7.1, I'm perfectly willing to be over indulged with optical fiber broad band.

It's one of those days when I look benignly on Verizon (They've got a knack for switching that mood off fast but just for today I feel privileged.).

I just finished signing the paper work to switch IPS's for my office.

Going from a dual T1 setup (whopping 2.8 meg) to fiber and 35 meg download and 5 megs up... Can't wait.

It's nice to have technologies that are current with this millennium.

Would be nice if they could get it to everybody though. Only a half mile outside limits of a city of 50,000 and all we can get is 21k dialup (or satellite of course....whee...).

I almost got excited a few nights ago after reading that Verizon had partnered with Pioneer Cellular to put a 4G LTE network in this area. Come to find out, they just retrofitted older 3G towers that were already on the south side of that city I mentioned. We live on the north side.....so still only dialup for us.

Pam. They have been trialing fibre optic to the local distribution points here in my home city for the last twelve months, this is my speed test reading taken during a peak time.

My workplace is switching to Comcast. Dedicated fiber to the new datacenter, 100 up/100 down, ~$2500 per month (which is ~$1000 less than our current ISP).

At home, I have FiOS, and have been happy with it overall, although some may remember it fried my computer and printer because they didn't hook up the power for the fiber transceiver to a surge protector, and a surge came in through the router... Needless to say, I have since put one in.

Comcast is back up to $70/month...bunch of thieves. I have to look for an alternative or tell them to drop the price or I leave....that has actually worked with Comcast in the past. Fortunately, I have two other alternatives here.

Im about to switch from UVerse to WOW. AT&T has been promising their 24Mb connection now for almost 2 years, and still nothing. Ive had the 18Mb/1Mb package from AT&T the whole time, but they fail to produce the higher speeds in my area. For a few $ more per month, I can have 50Mb/5Mb through WOW.

Don't count on getting those higher speeds - it's very dependent on traffic on the local loop. The cable company here offers up to 50 meg service, and I've yet to talk to anyone who gets anything consistently over 8.

I wish I could get 8, we have 2 isp's here and both of them suck. $40 a month for 2.5-3mb down and 1mb up actual speeds.

Don't feel bad - 35 bucks a month here for 2.6 down and 0.4 up.

I told Comcast I was considering going over to AT&T if we could not negotiate a better price. So they dropped my rate from 70 to $50 per month (for 20 mbps service). I called AT&T earlier and they said there would be a $100 installation fee plus I had to buy their cable modem (no choice of buying from Amazon or another third party) and there was a one year commitment. In the end it wasn't a better deal than Comcast but I wasn't going to tell Comcast that.

I have to negotiate again in 6 months, but this saves me $120 between now and then.

Here is my test results @ speedtest.net. They have been talking about getting 25Mb/s bonded DSL here for a few years but it seems that has turned to vaporware of sorts. The main thing they keep pushing over here is PrismTV, which I think is a similar product to AT&T Uverse. They were canvasing the neighborhood once every other week trying to get people to sign up to (I think) help cover the upgrade costs. I told them unless it's the same price I pay for Netflix, then it's too expensive.

Good ol' RoadRunner here has been steadily bumping up my download speeds for years. Upload on the other hand...not so much. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1777915134.png

Yeah I would like the 25Mb/s connection but I don't think the wife would want to up the bill. The 10Mb link is decent and there are no caps at all (which I'm very happy about). Sometimes when we have a couple of netflix movies running at the same time along with maybe her on her VPN for work and/ or an online game, youtube, etc it can choke a little, especially if a few others on the DSLAM are using it heavy too. We got the 10Mb link for free for a year as a trial about 4 years ago (up from 3Mb) and it was like night and day faster between the two. After the year was up I kinda forgot (on purpose ) about downgrading it. Honestly though, we couldn't go back if we wanted to due to the heavy usage compared to when we first got it.

For the heck of it I sniffed around on Centurylink's site and it seems that the offer a 40Mb link but when I check the availability, it says we are maxed out. Maybe one day we can upgrade to the next higher tier.

3Mb is OK for light surfing and youtube vids but not much else and probably not at the same time either. We had a 3Mb link and it was OK at the time but now we couldn't go back. Too much data usage.

Wow modem teaming! Well that was of course in days when the most intensive web graphics you would run into was a scrolling message box, flashing banner ad or maybe a shockwave animation. I really hated those days but it is what it is. I could barely get 33.3 and it was never stable. I could barely do any surfing or email. Towards the end I spent more time calling modems than surfing or email. I would get into an article or something like that and I would hear the modem click as it hung up the line due to a disconnect. We then got a 256K DSL and were blown away. I thought to myself that I should have done this long ago. We had that for awhile until I decided to look around on the Embarq site after getting an ad mailer advertising faster speeds for less money. That's when we upgraded to 3Mb/s.

Boo Hiss..... The building owner doesn't want Time Warner to dig up the parking lot to run cable... Might have to go with second choice ISP that can only offer 8 down/8up speeds...

It's a 12 building (all 2 stories) business park. Guessing that TW would have dig lines through out.... The patches to the parking lot would look ugly..

Then again - the park is along the big I635 that is under construction for the next SIX years. The city is building an upper deck to the existing freeway... The whole area is a big time mess

It sounds like they could use directional boring to get the cable where they (TW) need to go, but are more than likely too cheap to get one or don't want to haul it out for that job. The landlord or whoever owns the place should press them about the directional boring machine or try and source a contractor to work alongside TW during the job. It sounds expensive either way though.

@rjfvillarosa, those speeds are great. I wish the US would get caught up to europe and other areas of the world with the broadband speeds. It's pathetic that we are seemingly near the bottom on this.

Have I ever posted this?

This is the ISP at work. We're about to switch to Comcast, though -- should be the same speed for half the cost, and will go directly into our new generator-backed datacenter.
