Jeez, I didn't realize I just passed my 10 year anniversary last month. Must be something I like about this place to keep coming back that long. Thanks to Dris and all the mods for keeping this place up and running.

I've only barely passed my 2 year anniversary, not sure why I didn't run across PCM earlier since I've been on-line since BBS's were being run with 300 and 1200 baud modems. I could have used a resource like this forum when I built my first computer in the mid 80's.

I can't remember what first brought me here, but I am sure it was probably a search for a solution to a problem I was having, and I found it here. I have been on and off the forum sporadically because I have a lot of things that take up my time too much to be a regular poster, but I keep coming back because this is forum where you can always get the answers. I've graduated from someone who only wants solutions to a problem, to someone who is actually able to provide occasionally an answer to someone else's problem. This is a great forum.

Been here for a long time and learned a tremendous amount of info. I remember Sarge and GLC as the dialup 56K gurus.
Met GLC about 4 years ago. He had moved to Missouri and then hopped in his white Ford p/u and toured the western U.S.
Stopped by and we went to lunch. I had a very nice visit with the main man that kept me going in building and fixing pc's. Always ready to answer my not so smart questions no matter what.
Sarge and I go back a ways too. Did a lot of emailing about different things.
Really have enjoyed my time here and I keep looking in to see what's happening.

I think I still have one packed away somewhere among all the old computer gear. Used one several years before broadband finally became available. Amazing little modem - maybe I should frame it.

Near the end of my 56k days, I went with USR Sportsters instead of Supras, they were better on lousy phone lines. With a clean line, you couldn't beat a Supra.

Yep, that Diamond Supra Express was the thing in it's day Sarge. Excellent dial up modem.

56k was blazing fast compared to the 1200 baud modem I started with. My sister's family had a PCjr with a 300 baud modem, that was agonizingly slow.

How about a bit of nostalgia? This brings back memories of first gen ATI Radeon and nVidia TNT/TNT2 cards and tweaking settings to no end:

3DMark 2000 HD - YouTube

And after all these years, I still love the soundtrack.

That was cool. I was using a 3DLabs Wildcat back in them days. However, I do not think that benchmark could test my card if I recall correctly.

I wonder what ever happened to blue60007? That young man was a fountain of knowledge back when I first joined and between him, glc, Cricket, and Panama it seemed as though there was nothing that could not be fixed.

Wow. I just realized I hit my 10 year anniversary. Seems like yesterday I was a newbie asking about building my first PC.

Smile Thank you!

Not exactly sure how long I have been here, but I know it was either 96 or 97. Got my first computer in 96 and went online that year for the first time. For some reason, I am sure David D. explained why but I don't remember, the join dates for all earlier members was changed to 1999.

As is usual with Mircrosoft products I started running into problems right from the beginning and not having had anything to do with computers before that first one I knew nothing.

I was 52 at the time, still young enough that I thought I could master a PC in no time if I had the right instructions. I now know that no one will ever be a complete master of the computer, technology is moving so fast that what we learn today could be ancient news tomorrow.

Not exactly sure how I found PCMech, but once I did, with the help of David D and a few others who's nicks I have long forgotten I learned some basics and solved a few small problems.

Later when Reboot and GLC came along I really began to learn, I cannot even begin to tell you how the patience of these two gentlemen for a complete "know nothing" helped build my confidence, taught me a great deal and made it possible for me to eventually build my own machine. In fact the machine I am typing this on is the one, I built it back in March of 2011.

Every now and again I do require help and this is where I come to get it. As well, I try to come in once in a while just to see what is going on and pick up tips here and there. I am by no means a computer tech and never will be but as long as PC Mech is around I will continue to learn.

A really big thank you to all of you guys and gals that provide this fantastic service, it is appreciated.

Working on 10 years myself, crazy thats its been that long! This was the first forum I ever signed up on and where I learned 80% of what I know about computers. My family bought our first computer, an HP with 466 celeron, 64mb RAM and 20Gb hard drive running win98. I think I cam ehere looking to overclock it but I could be wrong.

Ive never met anyone here, other than a few friends who I referred, but I have spoken with a few on Im and email. PR, Kov-Ice, catacon...

Many thanks goes out to this community! You have fueled my interest in computers to a point where I have graduated college and am waiting on an interview with IBM. Its an entry level position but its a start. Thank you guys!!

Been about 9 years, came after I got tired of having people at Experts Exchange tell me I didn't know what I was talking about when they were chewing each other up for points. Fortunately not many here chew me up the same way. And hopefully I don't do others that way.

Interesting Bailey, mine started with accoustic couplers.

And a history note: Was present when Dennis Hayes and Dale Heatherington explained to the AAMHC (think I have the initials right)(Atlanta Area Micro Hobbiest) where they were headed with their modem experiments. At that time 300 was tops commercially and 1200 experimental. Dale cashed out early when they went public. Dennis lived large, gave up half of his to an ex-wife due to the experiments being done on the kitchen table, and evidenly went down in flames as Hayes Micro crashed.

Are there other forums you signed up for later where you learned 80% of what you know about computers?

Yeah, he's kidding, and he even got the joke wrong, he should have said 'the other 20%'.

PCM was actually my second registration... didn't much care for windrivers.com when I moderator flamed me telling me how I was wrong, so I suggested he was in error, they multiple mods ganged up with threats to ban me.... I proved him wrong... suddenly my posts disappeared... I asked where they were... then I was banned.
