I think MO stands for Magneto-Optical, and I cant guarantee I'm right, but I thought that was basically a CD-RW.(Don't trust me on this one).

MO? Why, that's the U.S. Postal code for The People's Republic (Almost) of Missouri! Seriously, go to this link. It provides a good definition of "Magneto-optical (MO) drive, and if you scroll towards the bottom of the page you'll see some informative links.

Yup, an MO drive is a magneto-optical drive. For a time these were touted as high capacity back up drives. They were a combination of CD and standard disk technology, but since CD burners (and now DVD burners) have come down in price (as has the media) these have seem to fallen out of favor. A quick search of a couple of distributors, shows that there are several manufacturers of these drives (Sony, HP and Fujitsu), the prices are rather steep (anywhere from $400 to $5000 for the drive and the media hovers in the $50 to $100 range).
The nice thing about them is that they offer fairly decent storage capacity (anywhere from 240mb up to 9gb) but their price point appears to put them in the server class of products. One other gotcha on these drives is that to get maximum data on these drives, you need to match the up the number of sectors on the disk. Based on the cost of the drives and the media, i would use a "hot" spare hard drive as your back up media, with 40GB drives in the same range as a couple of disks, this is most economical solution. |
