When a fish is big enough where you can't catch it and you have to shoot it...I don't think that's called fishing anymore.

Gars are shot or clubbed once onshore. Number one, you ain't fixing to take the hook out if you value your fingers. They're called "alligator gar". Number two, they're trash fish so you don't throw them back alive. Don't know why he filleted it. Surely not to eat.

Man, and I thought the muskie we get in Lake St Clair were huge. I remember reading in the paper about 20 years ago, a guy was throwing sticks in the Detroit River for his dog to fetch, needless to say, the pooch was taken by a muskie. Within that same week, a 64" muskie was pulled from the river and hair was found in its belly, believed to be the dogs.

Caught a few muskie in my days. Sturgeons are probably the only thing that can match that beast. Caught a few muskie in my days at the foot of 10 mile and Jefferson or there abouts. There was a banquet hall there as I recall. Caught my biggest one at the foot of Alter Rd. and Jefferson, totally surprise catch as we were bringing in sheephead most of the day. Sturgeons are probably the only thing that can match that beast. The real big ones (muskies) I seen caught were in man made lakes on the outskirts of Ann Arbor.

I hate to break the bad news again to those in Texas but you do not have what would be considered a large fish....since things are relative, I introduce to you Texans the Whale Shark....

Check it out on Wikipedia, (since there is no CTRL-C, CTRL-V on an iPad)

I still think that gar is an amazing catch because of the rarity and the fact a baseball bat would not do the trick.

My brother, a friend and I landed a 7 foot gar years ago, which my brother caught with his bow fishing rig. We ended up shooting it with a 22 to get it landed.

We sold the meat for 25 cents a pound and ended up with a substantial amount of gas money.

I've never eaten gar, but the preparation of choice is "gar balls", which is some sort of breaded balls of gar meat that's mixed with spices and deep fried. A friend said it's good.

Cleaned properly with the "Y" bones remove Pike are delicious, almost as sweet as Bluegill.
