With today's push-button warfare, does it really matter? Not like lady GI gonna go hand-to-hand with John Wayne in a foxhole.

If they stay in the rear maybe, infantry still get their hands dirty.

That was one of those announcements where I had to wonder if anyone asked the infantry soldiers, or combat officers.

Regardless of the latest war technologies available, we will always need boots on the ground. We had that in Iraq and have that in Afghanistan.

I just saw David's post again and a thought occurred to me. If we ever got to the point where we just sent drones etc. and were able to do war from long distance (I suppose nukes could count, but there is too much risk of hurting us all), then I suppose a war would mostly be on who the most most money (or at least weapons) and perhaps to some degree skill. I suppose there might be some of that now, but I think numbers of military and their skill come into play.

When you think about it, you don't "own" the land until you occupy it. This means nothing less than your own humans on the ground in control of everything. Even if you have air superiority, you still don't necessarily control the ground below you. Remote technology still doesn't necessarily get you 100% control of a parcel of land.
