Only 18" of snow ...

Well, winter finally caught up with NYC.
The good news is that it won't be 38".
The bad news is that it's still enough to bring the city to a halt.

I'm jealous to be honest. It would be nice if we had some sort of winter weather around here. The coldest it's gotten this year is like, 10*F. All this weekend is supposed to be in the mid to upper 50s. Last week we were having tornadoes!

I always dreamed about having so much snow that I could make a maze of tunnels.

No jealousy here, only sympathy. I spent a winter in Kansas and a winter in Korea and those 2 winters convinced me that I never want to live where it snows.

Hope the forthcoming "blizzard" doesn't effect the right coast too badly.

Hope it doesn't cause you too much grief Pam.
We have had one fall that stuck around for a few days and now they are threatening us with another blizzard and 60mph winds... that will create a few drifts I know...

It's a huge deal when it snows here. It probably happens less than once in every 10 years.

Further north than NYC, the news has been proclaiming this storm to be the latest snowpocalypse. So far, there's only been 2" of powdered snow at most.

Meanwhile, all the area schools closed for the day.

we can swap snow stories if you would like.

I lived thru both of these:

Blizzard of 1977 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Blizzard of 77 Slideshow - YouTube)

THE GREAT SNOW STORM OF 2001 -Buffalo, N.Y. (82.3 inches of snow fell in a period of one week)

At the moment everything is icing over, the heavy stuff hits around 4:30/5:00 PM.
A thick layer of snow and ice underneath it; should be fun over the weekend .

I grew up with people telling stories about Buffalo that I didn't believe then, in 1986, I spent a winter near there.
Wasn't a record but it was awesome, I also put it on the list of places I didn't want to move to!
I hear Watertown is worse, not moving there either

Just shy of 6" here on the ground, and all the schools are closed. We never got snow days unless we had over 8" of snow or freezing rain.

They got the memo about worse being on the way.

Buffalo is even worse that West Michigan. We both suffer from "lake effect" snow but they seem to get more than us. Snowed here all day yesterday and last night. Got anywhere from 6-16" of new snow around the area on top of about 6 that was on the ground. No big deal. It's just a normal winter in Michigan. I tell folks who complain about it, "Don't like it? MOVE!!" My option was buy a nice 2 stage snow blower a couple years ago and make sure to put on my wool socks when I go out to clear the driveway.

The thing I dislike most about winter is the drivers...Michigan drivers in particular. Seems they all forget how to drive once the snow starts falling. I have no troubles in my Caprice...and it has no ABS or traction control. Counter steer, dont slam on the brakes, and dont mash the gas, and everything is fine. The worst one are the people in 4x4s...see em in the ditch more than any other type of vehicle. I attribute that to a tendency for some of those drivers to be cocky/impatient/invincible behind the wheel. Seems they forget that they all stop the same

I agree, Tin. I was sitting at a light on one of the busiest roads in GR yesterday. Light was red and I was about 3rd in line. I just let off the brake and I feel a bump in the rear! Look in the mirror and a Chevy crew cab pickup is right on my bumper. I had heard another bump just before I felt mine. Got out to look and the guy behind the pickup is getting out of a Cherokee. Guy in the pickup checks on his wife and two kids and all are fine. My car didn't get a scratch - bumper lined up. Front of the Jeep is ripped open and hanging. He found the rear bumper and class 3 hitch on the pickup. I stayed until the cops arrived. Cop told me I could take off since there was no damage and it was obvious who was at fault. Idiots!

You should see Dallas. People going so slow with their flashers blinking or the other extreme. Not much sense to be seen...but all we ever get is ice, no snow to speak of.

2 winters ago, we had a 19 inch snowstorm. Schools were closed for 2 WEEKS.. The term "Joplin snow removal" is an oxymoron.

Yup. It snowed at my house last year for the first time since we lived here (23 years this past Dec). People that live where it snows would probably call what we had a "heavy frost". There was just enough snow on the ground for my neighbor's kids to build a skinny snowman but it took all of the snow in their front yard to do it!

It actually snows almost every year here but melts as soon as it hits the ground. When any actually stays, it's a big deal.

There's still only about two inches outside...looks like this was yet another storm that was overhyped.

I remember that blizzard of 1977. Me and my friends were the first to step in the snow on a street right in back of our house.. No tire tracks no noting.. We spent the entire day, removing snow, and pushing cars of the streets.. Never even went in side to get warm or anything to drink... Today you would not get me to go out doors unless it was an emergency...

Makes me laugh. One of my friends moved to Atlanta a few years ago, and got a ticket for doing the speed limit due to an inch of snow on the ground. He told the officer "Im from Michigan, we know how to drive in this stuff." The officer replied "Maybe you do, but these people dont, theyll slam on the brakes and take out 10 cars."

At the end of the day, it just sounds like winter in northeast. Difference is there are so many folks and all the journalists live there so a big deal. Not a big deal in North Dakota or Alaska. For me, I'll take Texas and the occasional tarnader in the spring. I like wearing my shorts this week-end.

Tell you what. After seeing how people drive here in Texas when the roads have a little rain (mist) for the most part.. I would hate to see them drive in some real snow.. Last night I seen 4-5 major wreaks in FT Worth, all involving at least 2-3 cars...And that was before the strom we had towards the end of the night.. Hell I drive a Tanker, and fully loade 80-84lbs driven 60-65mph I still kept it on the road, and made it home without a scratch...

How is snow measured in inches a big deal? In the mountains here the snow is measured in meters.

With regard to Atlanta:
"Maybe you do, but these people dont"
is more than true. Over the years I've had 3 transit busses in my yard from sliding off the road in front. The tow truck operators had no clue how to get the busses out.

One driver screamed the whole 150 feet as she slowly slid down the hill backwards and ended up with the back end against my fence and the front end in the yard across the street leaning against the mailbox.
