Thats a lot of big talk about nuclear war from a country that could be turned in to glass and we wouldn't even miss the amount of nukes it took from our inventory. I really wish someone in power here had the stones to just start sending a sniper team in to visit people like this. Just keep splitting their melons until they put someone in power with some sense. Heck if you don't want to risk the American lives I know we have smart bombs that can target areas smaller than a window, one of those in the bedroom of a dictator would probably make people think before speaking.

It's called saber rattling. He is trying to impress the proletariat. Communists know that in order to maintain power that they cannot look weak. The proletariat need to know they will be beaten down by an all powerful government should they disobey the government. This young leader has not developed to wisdom to know that in international diplomacy that words really do matter. One day he may be irresponsible enough to say something or to do something that may draw a preemptive strike against him, not by the US but possibly by China, Japan, South Korea or a combination of nations.

He also knows that one boomer submarine could take out every major military facility in his country within half an hour with 24 MIRV nuclear missiles. He would effectively lose his power, lose his country and all the benefits that come with having absolute control over a nation if he were to launch a nuclear weapon, and he knows this. The responsible nations clearly have the upper hand here.

I don't think it is the US's business to do anything other than to provide a platform that will cause severe consequences should he launch a nuclear missile at any country.

Peace through superior firepower.....

Does anyone know what the donut shaped device is aft of the sonar transducers? Is it a large diaphragm for hearing and transmitting ultra low frequencies?

I think there is a little under-estimating going on or that's how it appears in the media. I wonder and pray that Mr. Hagel has all the bases covered. It's not a matter of "if " but more so "when"

It is not inconceivable that we are at the end of days.

I think it is just the opposite. The media and the talking heads are overestimating Kim Jong Un. He knows he has everything to lose and nothing to gain by going to war against another nation. It's all saber rattling. He has it good in his little communist fiefdom. Why risk changing a good thing?

Although it might appear to many in the western world that he is crazy, I don't think he really is and therefore is aware of the dire consequences should he act on his threats.

Probably what worries him more than anything is an uprising within his own country which seems to be the motivation for the saber rattling. The proletariat must be convinced that they are better off with him in power than without and that the consequences of trying to remove him from power would be severe. What better way to convince the proletariat that he is the all powerful leader that can squash them than to show them that he has enough military power that he can freely threaten the rest of the world? He doesn't actually have this amount of power but a potentially rebelious proletariat do not need to know this.

I predict this will play out thusly:

1) the DPRK will keep running it's mouth (like it always does this time of year)
2) eventually they will say what they really want (food and hard currency)
3) some country will give it to them (probably the US)
4) the DPRK will then, internally, proclaim victory and tout to their people that the evil Americans, lacking the stomach to fight and overawed by the might of the DPRK, sent them the only things that they could: food. The DPRK didn't want anything else because the DPRK is light years ahead of the decadent west.

then, 9 or 10 months from now: lather, rinse, repeat.

pure speculation but it might be used to isolate the sonar transducer from the rest of the boat to limit the interference of natural ship vibrations.

Thats how it normally works, its pretty sad that we give in to it. Its like giving someone money so you don't have to beat the heck out of them, it makes no sense. Just do what needs to be done and precision strike anything that looks like it could house military hardware. I think the same thing should be done to Iran, the civilized country's should nut up and join together and stop it now before they have a chance to actually do some damage to us.

My son is in the Marines and he called me tonight... He is going tomorrow...Marine Corps Forces-Korea and the Republic of Korea Marine Corps.

He has already been to Afghanistan 2X, and Iraq 2X.

I think I am going to cry. I can not take this anymore, I love him so much. I think he has battled under Maj. Gen. Mike Regner before but I am not certain. His phone is off... crap

He thinks he is playing in the Super Bowl.

One problem with having a couple of inept leaders is that they feel the need to prove their manhood. See it everyday on any playground amongst kids. Mine bigger than yours, so to speak. Then a smart, older person steps in. Trouble is, a severe shortage all around in this case

Here's the scary part... Russia!

In recent weeks, Russia has been warning the USA that there would be "consequences" for military action taken against Iran. Now we have this N. Korea situation where Russia warns the USA that the situation is getting out of control.

So think about it, why would a little stinking country like N. Korea have the nerve to threaten the USA if they didn't secretly have the backing from a country like Russia that does indeed have the capability to nuke America?

I agree; we excel at nation building

Better yet, let China handle it. For decades China has used N Korea as a buffer against the west but some recent articles suggest China is fed up with N Korea. It will be interesting to see what they do. I'm sure much is going on behind the scenes that we don't see. China wants stability too, it's in their economic interest.

Thanks everyone. I talked to him this morning and he is calm as a cucumber and quite motivated as usual. I think he misses the action if the truth be told. He is the epitome of a Marine. After talking to him, I want to join him.

Agree 100% and that's the only way you stay in power in N Korea.

He's consolidating his power right now with the powerful Generals. He's gotta look tough and grab headlines, the more the better.

This probably won't help much but please know we owe your son a great debt. He's the reason we can freely talk about these issues and agree/disagree, like our President, hate our President, and on and on. I wish him the best of times.
