Hey Guys its been a while and I wasn't quite sure where to put this question so I decided to put it here.
So I drive an 01 Chevrolet Blazer and it has a tape deck in the front of the center console on the bottom, it looks like this: ![]() I have been thinking what to do with the spot because I don't use the tape deck anyway. I considered a CB Radio and even though that would be cool I don't think I would use it enough to make it worth paying for a decent unit and antenna and running the wire for an antenna. Then it hit me when I was upgrading my Head Unit. My new Head Unit has a rear USB port that I was able to run all the way down from where it is on the dash to underneath where the tape deck is in the picture above. I took out the tape deck (it just slides out and is mounted in a mount that measures 6 1/8" wide and 1 1/2" tall, the tape deck itself is 7 1/8" deep) I then noticed it is similar in size to an extra 5 3/4" DVD drives I had from when I upgraded to a Blu Ray Drive in my PC. I have concluded that If I buy a hot sway bay and a Sata to USB connector I may be able to use a hard drive loaded with music with my Stereo. My questions are that If I do this will the Sata to USB connectors make it work similar to a flash drive? and would a car environment be suitable for a Hard Drive or should I purchase an SSD to use so I don't have to worry about heat? Any Comments Would be Appriciated, Jace Neville |

If a USB flash drive would work then just use that.

I think it would have to be a notebook drive or a SSD because USB alone cannot power a 3.5" desktop drive.

My experience with using HDD in a car has been failure of the drive. If the discs are spinning and you hit a bump, the disc can be scratched, possibly rendering the drive unusable. Lesson learned the hard way.
