System Tray icons -- how many have YOU got?
I don't know why every program in creation feels the need to use the system tray. I finally found a freeware util (Tray Manager, from the Nov. 2000 PC Magazine) that allows me to condense many icons into ONE systray icon, but until this, I had:
1) Volume control -- useful 2) FTP Administration program -- useful 3) Email notification -- useful 4) Zonealarm -- don't need the icon, but I kind of like it anyway 5) ICQ -- useful 6) Keyboard -- WHY does there need to be a systray icon telling me my special keyboard keys/volume control are enabled? 7) Mouse -- Why do I need to see that the wheel on my mouse will function? 8) Webshots -- I don't need to see an icon, I just want my wallpaper to change daily 9) DirectCD -- Again, I don't need an icon to know I have a CD burner, and DirectCD auto-launches on blank media insertion anyway. 10) Antivirus -- Yeah, so my antivirus is running. Again, why bother having an icon? 11) Utility to auto-update a dyn-DNS service if my IP changes -- yet again, I don't need to see it, by any means. Add those to my clock, and I had quite a lot going on over there. All of these programs are useful, but I will never understand why half of them show up in the systray (and you can't turn the tray icon off, either).

That's what I have:
I have Inoculate running. Some proggies insist to have their icons in systray during instal or after- I always say- NO. DirectCD I use when I need it. ICQ- when I'm on. Last edited by Gintaras; 12-18-2001 at 06:04 PM. |

ZoneAlarm and the speaker. That is all that will ever be. The only other thing that loads in my startup file is Adobe Gamma Correction.

Count 'em yourself
I don't like the mouse one there, but it seems some of the mouse functions don't work unless I have it on the taskbar.

2---Volume control, and ATI's loader. My solution to getting rid of the DirectCD icon was getting rid of DirectCD, lol. Who uses that anyway? And with no "msconfig" in W2k, it seemed easiest to me to just uninstall it. Now I got a new burner and installed Nero anyway. As for a mouse, I hate mouse software, and I never install it. My wheel mouse (Logitech) works just fine without it.

Direct CD actually a good thing. Time to time I use CD-RW discs- it's very useful. As for msconfig, there are 2 options: Startup Control Panel or msconfig.exe (I think, it's WinME msconfig)- 64Kb zipped/141Kb Last edited by Gintaras; 12-18-2001 at 09:52 PM. |

glc, you have more stuff running in your systray than I have installed, lol.
And I forgot, I usually have 3 icons, the w2k "local area connection network cable unplugged" one is usually there too. I have a crossover cable going between my computer and my son's, so every time he shuts his off, I get the "unplugged" icon. Gintaras, whenever I did use a CDRW, which is pretty rare to begin with (might not be too bad now that I have a 24x10x40, I used to have an 8x4x32 ), I just multisessioned it 3 or 4 times, then copied all that stuff to a temp directory, blanked the disc, and rewrote it in one big session. I think I used DirectCD a couple of times, and it screwed up the disc both times, not to mention taking like 45 minutes to "format" it.

& that is why I find XP's systray icons hiding utility a blessing in disguise! * I've got 4 network connections that remain hidden on Inactive.
* PC-Cillin invariable disappears after updating * SBLive's AudioHQ disappears * windows me$$enger disappears (cos I have no friends )* Even new mail notification on OE disappears after a while of not reading my new mail! |

Here at work, I have Norton Antivirus. Ocasionally I get the email notification, which is either a problem I need to take care of or a PC Mech reply email.

You can see from the pics in this thread: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...4&pagenumber=2
I don't have many, in any of the OS's I run. A few more in XP, but noticably missing is any antivirus or firewall ![]() The common things are: a network activity one, Speaker, and Push the Freakin' Button. |
