I think it varies state to state, but here in Texas you can take Defensive Driving for one ticket each year. If it is your first you can. It really sucks though, they can sum the whole class up in 1 hour but they are required by law to stretch it out over 6 hours :P Have fun!

Even if you took driving school this would cost money.
My best advice is to plead guilty and pay your fine. Chalk one up to experience. In my state you can spread the payment out as designated by the court. But I gotta be honest, in my city there are creeps driving like maniacs with no licence and insurance and it seems like they never get stopped. But when an honest looking guy mistakenly blows a sign or happens over the limit, the guys in blue are right on you. Why you ask? I know why. Because honest hard working guys like me pay thier bills and if the occasssion should arise that I get a ticket, I pay it. |

i'm actually just thinking of paying the fine.Gona call my insurance agent tommorow to find out how much would a ticket go up if got a ticket. If it ends up that it's about the same after everything sayd and done then i will pay the ticket. If it's comes out that it's much less if i go to driving school then i may actually do it.Considering that i'm only 20,i would reather not have the ticket follow me for the next 7 years.

just did the math.
I pay 929 a month. My insurance will be raised by about 15% as far as i know.Which comes out to 139.95/12month=11.61+250 for the ticket so if u devide everything by 12 month i will be paying $32.45 more.Dose anyone here knows how much the driving school cost? |

I don't know what state you live in but in California you still must pay the fine even if you choose traffic school. Therefore you have the cost of the ticket plus the cost of traffic school. The only advantage to traffic school is the ticket does not become a "point" on your driving record. "Points" are what effect your insurance rate. Also, in Calif, you must go to court and "request" driving school, you can't just enroll on your own as you can't go to traffic school for all traffic offenses.

If you're going to request traffic school, appear on the date indicated and request traffic school from the judge or commissioner. If you're just going to pay the ticket just go to the bail window and pay it. Also, in most courts in So. Cal, you can get an automatic 30-60 day extension just by making a phone call and asking for an extension. Give them the citation number and ask for an extension.
(I once delayed a ticket almost a year once before deciding not to fight it because I was simply too busy. It became kind of game to me; seeing how long I could keep my money out of their hands.) Free Advice (very rare): If you get a ticket and think you're going to fight it, other than politely answering questions, DON'T EVER SAY ANYTHING TO THE OFFICER EXCEPT "THANK YOU" OFFICER. Then go on your way. Live to fight another day. The problem with ylen's unwise comments to the officer is now he/she is going to remember him and will have certainly taken some notes at the time of the citation. You want the officer to forget you. You certainly don't want the officer to remember you. If you decide to fight the ticket, you've got the right to cross examine the officer but you've got to know what you're doing if you're gonna play that game. Also, a "Notice to Appear" is a regular traffic ticket. |

In San Francisco, in Northern California, you can request driving school at the window where you pay the ticket. There is an administrative cost which is equal to the fine and about a $20 cost of the traffic school. At least that's what it was a few years ago.
Where do you live in California that you can get insurance for $9.00/mo? The ticket will affect your insurance for at least 39 months! If you get a subsequent ticket, you're ugly in the rates department. But I would suggest you go to traffic school. Should you move, your rates will rise accordingly! You can go to traffic school once each 18 months. Once I had a friend who was going to get a ticket for doing 40 in a 25! He told the cop he was stupid and look at the speed limit sign, which was 40. The cop looked at him and said, "Like I said, you were doing 50!" He got the ticket for being a smart ass! |

LawyerRon, can you confirm this?
I heard of a rumor of a loophole in order to get out of getting 'points' on your driving record. When you get a ticket, look for a place to send the check and send the check for an amount over what the ticket is for (say $65.30 for a $62.00 ticket). When the clerk is depositing the check or whatever they do they will send you a check back for $3.30 because you payed too much. When you recieve the check, throw it away. The 'points' are only added if all of the transactions are complete, however, by throwing away your check the transaction is NOT complete, but the government has their money and will leave you alone.. does this work? Saw it on another site and was curious Nick Last edited by NickLuto; 12-18-2001 at 10:51 PM. |

Yes, but what if you get another ticket? Your insurance will go up even more.

In Michigan they are not really interested in giving points or getting you in trouble. They just want your cold hard cash and a promise that you learned your lesson. For a 1st time offender you probably can easily pay the fine, promise the judge you won't do it again and request not to have the points recorded. You sound young so if you dress well and act sincerely remorseful it may work. It works here in MI.
Another posibility is the cop won't show up if you contest the ticket. Traffic stops are so routine that a cop could spend his entire day in court handling traffic cases. Many times the cop will feel that the time is better spent catching bad guys than defending the ticket. This method, however, suffers the worst consequences should it fail. You may get points, fine and school if you lose. I have friends who have beaten a ticket because the cop doesn't show but I've also have friends who've been reamed when the cop does show. |

I'm a Pennsylvania driver. I got a ticket in New Jersey once before well I got to court everbody there was pleading guilty. The judge would say a few words and the defendant would walk away. I thought easy. Now it was my turn. The judge asked how do you plead? I said not guilty. All of a sudden the whole court got quiet. I thought what? Then they brought this prosecuter in. He started accusing me of this and that, making all sorts of accusations.
I almost lost my cool. But I did argue my case. I got off with a slap on the wrist. I remember walking out of there wishing I had just plead guilty and paid my fine like all the others. I said to myself never again. I never plead innocent again even though I was a few times after that. I gotta be honest every time I have ever walked into one of these courts and plead guilty and acted remorseful I always walked out with a smile on my face. Maybe out a few bucks but still the same. What I'm kinda saying is this. These days you practically need a law degree from Harvard to plead innocent. Oh I have heard of some that have pulled it off, but it never seems that way any time I ever went to court. Last edited by highrisemech; 12-20-2001 at 04:56 PM. |

$929 for the insurance, out of curiosity, what does it cost to get your plates for your car. Around my area, things work a bit backwards. I'm paying $1209/year for my plates which gives me a very basic insurance package with a $700 deductable and I do believe it's $200,000 liability. I pay an addtional $228/year to reduce my collision and comprehensive deductable to $200 and my glass deductable to $100 and an additional $2,000,000 liability.
As far as the ticket is concerned, the way I look at it, you know you were speeding, you were caught, pay your fine.

You are an idiot.
You admit you were speeding and then tried to 'influence" the cop with your connections downtown. I have been driving since 1964 and have NEVER had a ticket, other than parking-in Seattle I might add. So shut up, pay the fine and the extra insurance. And BTW, what the hell does your post have to do with computers? Forgot to say, you will probably lose your gun rights too. Thats the way the proverbial "they" do it now to take away that right. moses Last edited by Moses; 12-20-2001 at 07:51 PM. |

Here in NZ they are particularly hard on speeding (and boozin too..) and to be frank.. it's a good thing too.. plenty of people have died here.. and in the states i imagine.. going too fast with nobody around.. no matter how good a driver you think you are..
the police.. i'm sure.. have better things to do than pull you over just to be a prat.. if you get caught speeding just handle it.. there's no point bithing and whinging trying to say you didn't do something you obviously did.. i don't know why people do it.. perhaps watching too many politicians? It's like those hockey players who'll stand their arguing that they "never hooked nuthin! blah blah.." when it's plain to see they did.. |

i wouldn't be trying to find a way to get out of a ticket if the speed limit made sence but it don't.
The lanes are so big that the can easily make them two instead of one. Also their is great visibility and at the time when i was driving their was no traffic. What i hate the most is that cops will hide somehwere and then try to catch u speeding. If they really wante u to slow down then just park couple of cops cars with out any cops and everyone gona slowdown. |
