Hello TV-Man... Can you please assist?
Hello TV-Man,
I've heard you're the guru when it comes to TVs... Would you be so kind to assist if you can? I have a Toshiba 30" TV that will not turn on... When I hit the switch, I hear the normal click, but nothing happens... Do you know what this might be? Could it be the power supply or the switch itself? If so, are these easy to find and replace? I hate to take it somewhere (and pay a service charge) just to have them tell me it'll cost more than it's worth to fix it! Thanks for any assistance! |

Hi,
I'm not TV Man but it happens that I do electronics including repairing TV's. I suppose your model is a remote controlled TV then I have a question for you - when you press the power does the RED LED POWER LIGHT goes on at ALL? If this comes up and then pressing the Start on the Remote - it should - depends on the model switch to green - if it just drops out then you have either a bad output stage (Flyback or Horizontal Output broken ) in both cases the Power Supply will sense this and cut off power from the cirquit.. Do you have the exact model on that TV you should find the Model String number at the back of the SET....

HPro,
Thanks for replying! When I press the power switch on the TV, the red LED power light comes on for a quick second then shuts off... When I hit the power switch again, it does nothing... If I unplug the set and let it "reset", this happens again... When I use the power switch on the remote, nothing happens at all! It's a Toshiba and the model number is CF30D50... Thanks again! |

Have the horizontal output Stage checked - I suppose that the Output Transistor is short - this will have the effect you describe - the cost of that transistor isn't over 5 USD and for a Quailifed TV Tech it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to exchange this including opening and closing the back cover..

Yes if you have have knowledge of followings
1.Measure the the part - to make sure that it is this one which has been shorted 2.If you have Solder experiences..and Solder Equipment 3.You will need a Industrial Blower to get the TV clean inside first because of High Voltages 25KV and up around the picture tube there is allways a lot of dust accumulated when the TV has been run for more than 1 year.. The part I'm referring to looks like the one I made a picture below just has another number - and it's located close to the Flyback Transformer screwed to the Pressed Iron Heatsink which again is screwed to the Plastic holder plate of the TV's PCB surrounding.. The Flyback Transformer is a somewhat big Black Platic thing which is easy to reconzie by the RED Cable which comes out on TOP of it and this one will connect to the PICTURE TUBE almost at the top of it - having a Grey (Black)SILICONE RUBBER cover with a diameter of about 2inches or 5 Centimeters - you will not be able to see the connecting Spring which connects this header to the GLAS Metal Surrounded 5mm in diameter hole in the TV'S Picture Tube - unless you lift up the surrounding Rubber I referred above.. WARNING THIS CONTACT will have a STATIC LOADING even the TV has been switched off fo DAYS in the range of KV's (Kilo Volts) and you need to DISCHARGE this first By inserting a SCREWDRIVER between the Rubber and the Contacts in on the header of it and then connecting them to GROUNDING of the TV's Ground otherwise you will be in for a unpleasant Surpise - Look at the Pictures below - you need to measure the Output Transistor for SHORT Cirquit with a OHM METER - therefore it should be soldered out of the Circuit beforehand.. B - C ~ 10 Ohms B - E ~ 10 Ohms visa versa NO READING.. Toshiba TV'S are using Japanese Standard Transistors which will be numbered C**** or D**** the on the picture (Component side)is 2SD1427 - the one I made a Single picture is 2SD1884 - THIS one isn't of a TOSHIBA TV - but just to have you see how it looks like - the most easy way to test the cirquit for a Blown Output Transistor is by Disconnecting it - Soldering it out - and then applying power to the unit - if the RED LIGHT STAYS ON then the output TR is Death if the RED LED still Drops out then you also have to check YOKE AND FLYBACK - there a Certified Technisian should do the work..Iresized the pics for you but you can download the Full size pictures Here Hope this helps

Wow!
I was thinking of trying it myself and I think you made me wise up... I'm not very familiar with electronics... I'm better off getting a certified tech to look into it and besides, if the part cost under $5 USD, it's worth getting fixed, even with the labor charge! Thanks for all the great info... You probably saved my TV and my life, considering I had no idea about the static charge in KV! Thanks again and Happy Holidays! |
