introductions
I thought i'd give myself an intro too. I have a long night ahead of me, so why not? I stumbled across this site when looking for info about RAID. I have an 800 MHz AMD with what appears to be a broken MSI K7T pro motherboard and just got the MSI Limited Edition turbo to replace it. I have not put it in yet, but am hopeing all goes smoothly. I'll probably be looking to get a faster processor at some point...all of this is somewhat new to me as I have usually learned enough about computers just to get by. Oh yea, and i'm stuck here at work until midnight EST and its a quiet night, so feel free to distract me.
Anyone else stuck working today and/or tomarrow, like me? |

Hi sabina_411,
Hello and welcome to the PC Mechanic forum. Just curious, what makes you think your MSI K7T Pro is broken? What kind of problems are you having with it? Is your PC a custom built computer? Do you know what parts were used in it? What OS are you running? With enough information provided by you, we may be able to find out what's wrong with your system. Cricket

Well, the trouble started when a plant dropped on the power strip. Next thing I know, the computer won't power up. I jiggle the cord and it starts to turn on, then cuts out after a second. The cord seemed to be touchy before, but this is the first time it wouldnt come on. I put a new power supply in it hopeing that was all that was wrong. But still the same thing, it sounds like it wants to start, but cuts out after a second. I disconnected the hard drive and the disk drives, and low and behold the thing powers up ok. I put in the the old power supply, and the same thing, it powers up with nothing connect to the motherboard. Then I connect just the hard drive, and it powered up. I didnt know what to make of that...but the next time I tried to power up with the hard drive attached, it didnt work. Now it won't even power up without the hard drive attached. So I thought with how screwy its acting its probably something on the mboard..I donno..

Hi sabina_411,
Did you replace the power strip? What about the power cord that plugs into the power supply? Have you checked to see if all the power connectors in the system are connected properly? If you're comfortable working with the computer, you might try this: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=12753 If your system starts up okay once it's out of the case, then something might have been shorting out the motherboard while it's in the case. A loose screw, a stand off that's installed but not used, etc... You want to be sure that it is the motherboard that's at fault before you replace it. Starting out of the case with only the CPU, heatsink, video card, PC speaker, power supply and RAM will help you to isolate the problem. If the system still doesn't start up, then you can look a little more closely at the motherboard as the problem. Cricket

I tried a different outlet, I bipassed the power strip completely, I tried a different power cord. The thing about a loose screw has been mentioned to me already as a possibility, but I have not taken the thing apart yet.

Hi sabina_411,
Your troubleshooting steps have been very thorough so far. Good job! It's very possible that the motherboard received some kind of spike or extra jolt of electricity when the power strip got smacked and got damaged in some way. Starting it out of the case will let you eliminate the possibility of a short messing up the system. You may also try to remove the CPU and RAM then reinstall them...sometimes this clears up some strange behaviors. Cricket
