We're All Connected

Everywhere you go there is some sort of device connected to the WWW. This vast network of digital information being stored and transmitted and relayed.

Most of us are too naive or too stubborn to believe that as single beings we are insignificant. We fail to see the bigger picture.

Everyday I go to school and talk to my friends via my cell phone or PDA. I meet new people via the web. I visit places and experience things that I would have never been able to if it weren't for technology. Of course these experiences are limited. We haven't yet created a completely virtual world in which we can submerge ourselves in.

Humans are such arrogant creatures, aren't they? We give all the credit to ourselves. We disregard the tiny cells or the many organs working together to keep us alive. Things we have no conscious control over. I suppose we merely make the decision to think and solve problems, with only the intentions of saving our flesh which we don't even respect.

I wonder if we even need our bodies at all. Possibly our bodies are just devices we use to connect to this world. This world where we can interact with other minds and other bodies. Possibly the web is another means of doing that. Possibly we no longer need out bodies to claim we exist. Or should I say: We still exist without our bodies, but there is no one to see us or hear us or KNOW of our existence... so how can we exist if we aren't KNOWN to exist.

I wonder if this network we are creating is a neural network. Possibly we are all the cells and organelles of a larger entity which has yet to take shape. Is it possible that humanity will one day awaken with a unified consciouness? Will Earth be a living organism then?

Of course it's impossible to say. If we are part of another being, who knows how long the developmental processes would take. Something of such a large magnitude would have a Universe as its body and might even exist outside of time.

and by extending this premise, you could make the case that our solar system is, like, an atom making up, a molecule, which is like our galaxy, which you know, could be part of cell of this, like, super large being you know??!?

Hello folks,
I think what this person is tring to say is thus:
"Is there not more?"
"Am I not more then simply to exist?"

For an indepth explanation consult your handbook:
"Hitchickers guide to the galaxy"

All is explained therein.

The world can be explained by the number 3.

Lain,

are you a Trek fan?

There is absolutly nothing shameful to that (I'm a Trek fan). If you're not, you should consider becoming one!

As Toaster said, "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" says that the Earth is a super computer built by mice (who are in fact pan-dimensional aliens) to find the great question to Life the Universe and Everything. I strongly recommend you that book. It is funny, and philosophical (well, kind of) at the same time...

Ten bucks I can guess what SOMEONE'S been watching =] I should watch those DVDs someday.

(For those who've never seen "Serial Experiments Lain", that's the inspiration for Lain's post, not Trek).

The only cartoon that serious computer geeks should watch is the Warner Brothers Roadrunner cartoons. As ACME is a synonym for MICROSOFT.

There was an episode of X-Files where a guy hooked himself up to his computers, so he would only live on the internet. Although, he had created an AI virus first, but then it distroyed him when he plugged himself in.

Actually, there is a guy doing expereiments with hooking transmitters up to his nervous system, trying to be able to comunicate with computers directly.
