Question Memory Query

Im just curious why it is that RAM can possibly read as less than it actually is. When I first got my HP Pavilion it came equipped with 64 megs of memory. When I booted and checked under system properties, it read as only 63 megs. Is it just a slighty corrupted stick or is their somthing else wrong. Its not important to fix, I have since upgraded to 191 but I was just curious.

Usually, this is caused by memory set aside by the BIOS [or the operating system] for special use; it's there, but not available for the system's general use.

Or so I was once told.

If you have 64Mb RAM that's not shared and good quality, it should read ~65XXX, I think.
I have 256Mb and it read 262XXX Mb.

I just guess- it's backwards what HDD manufactureres mark

Is there any disk caching utilities like smartdrv etc running? Those should report different RAM #s

It's subtracting the shared video memory. Your Pavilion has onboard video with no dedicated video memory.

I guess that makes sense glc, but why would my onboard video need just one meg of ram, the integrated video on my system is 11megs.

one of the reasons for this is that the way to shared video memory works is that the video card taps what it needs at the time. while you're in plain old windows mode (no 3d) then all you need is 1MB, but as your needs change (increase in color depth, resolution, or 3d graphics), the system will pull in and use more of that memory as needed.
