I just happened upon one and started scheming.
You have to admit it would be sweet to pop in a 5 1/4 boot disk. |

Sure - just check your BIOS and see if 1.2mb floppies are supported. Most boards still support both an A and a B drive, the exceptions are the new Intel P4 boards that only support a single floppy.

Why?
Server PCs have one, I don't think you'll see a prebuilt with dual floppies unless it is custom ordered, why? Logan |

Mine has 0 floppies. . .
![]() If I would ever need to copy files to a floppy then I can transfer it via network to my old PC (P133, it has a floppy) and there I can read and write to it. RJ

One 3.5 and one 5.25, and they both do get used occasionally.

I currently have 2 networked, internet sharing PC's. no installed floppy.
When i order the parts for my new system, I forgot about a floppy drive, so i have one. I will install it, if i have a need for it some day.

Good luck finding those 5 1/4, actually an old 286 sitting near me has an ugly brownish tan collored floppy, hmm.... I wonder if my board will support it? probbably should check. The problem is I ~accidentally~ pulled off those 5 1/4 connectors from my floppy cable, I think I killed my cable(oh while, how impornant can that be? very when trying to wrok with Linux).

Go to pricewatch.com and under storage click media then page down to 5 1/4 and click. There is like four places that sell it listed. Problem is a ten pack of IBM 1.2 is $1.00 but shipping starts a $2.00.

I saw that my local wal-mart had some 5.25" disks the other day...I had to laugh and wonder when the last time someone bought them was. Then, ironically, a lady came into my work and asked if we sold them...hehe. Do they even make 5.25 drives anymore?

Actually, I need to take 5 1/4 drive out of 486, put on 550, and move all my old backups to hard disk. Lord, I've got maybe 150 disks formatted to 1.7 megabyte, loaded with zips and backups, gotta sort them before I can even start. From time to time, I wish I had it done, so I could play some of the old DOS games I zipped up. Most you old goats remember the days when a 40 meg hard drive was BIG. Installing Tie fighter used half my hard drive!!

The stator out of them makes a really cool wall decoration. That's about the only possible use I can see for one.
