Why So SLOW??
Last 2 days it takes a long time for pages to load at PCMech. Tracert shows 14 hops from me to you, at 19ms per hop, but the last 5 hops are outrageous (55ms). Seems slower than 55. This is on all 3 pc's.
Just wondering if anyone else noticed.

I would think it's the ad servers. I run Ad-Subract to kill the ads. I used to get lags occasionally before the forum upgrade but haven't had a problem after it.

I think it's the ad servers, folks - I'm on dialup and it's no slower than usual. Set your browser to not show images and not use javascript and I bet it loads instantly.
Broadband spoils you real quick, folks - we haven't heard any complaints from the modem users. |

Hal, when were the "upgrades"? My slowness began Saturday.
glc, I ain't "spoiled". When I select "post reply" it's still slow and there's no ads loading that I can see. I don't think it's a hop anyway as I get 50-60 after going out of my loop, no matter which site going to. Even Microsoft.com loads faster, but it's no biggie, really. Simply put. The forums are slow. Lets try to work someting out now. They may be fast for people farter away from the server or even closer, but the fact is that ir general slow. Maybe the T1 the server is on has been hacked or someting. lol, j/k about the T1 stuff. Ask the host whats up.

Same thing using DSL, a dial-up and ab-subtract, images and Java off. I don't believe it's the hops, even though dial-up shows an increase toward the end as well. I'm getting 110ms and then hitting 239 toward the end with dialup. Same with Opera, IE and NS. I dunno, especially when other folks are ok. There's other things to fret over, anyway.

Come on people, I've been on some form of broadband for well over a year now -- and GLC's right, you get spoiled. If the page doesn't just pop right up, you start to think somethings wrong. Give it a rest -- as if those few extra milliseconds are going to go wasted away from your life. I ran a NeoTrace and came up with:
5.85 seconds -- come on, complain about something worth complaining about. Look at Carl's tracert log -- over half of those are within the Sprint Network -- the PacBell/SBC dsl package runs through a ton of Sprint lines -- I was with them for 6 months (Ameritech/SBC) and ran into the same issues. Almost all of mine are within the ATTbi network for whatever reason. -Craig Last edited by audiyoda; 03-03-2002 at 09:44 PM. |

I ain't complaining, just wondering. And I'm not fretting over milliseconds. Going over dial-up I average 110 to alot of sites and they load faster, so it's not the hop times. I originally wondered if there was a "known" snafu and rather than watch Karla Faye on tv, decided to poke around.

audiyoda,
I know where you're coming from and you're right. I only have the slow problem with this site, my favorite. I disabled images and javascript and it didn't help. Like Sarge says, there are bigger things to fret about. Carl |

Strange how some have a slow time, and others, like me, have no problems. If anything, it's faster than it was before.

Ok, the site load faster using my dial-up account than with my wireless account and I do not have this problem with any other websites. Somethings not right.

Sunday night it took an average of 40 seconds for main page, then 20-30 for each forum page. Made no difference between DSL or dial-up. The headers would load asap, but the content is what took the longest. Monday night all seems normal on this end. Now, my life isn't measured in seconds to the point of impatience watching pcmech load. It was just an observation.
