I am really struggling - yesterday I discovered that when opening or saving documents in Corel 8, inside the popup box which shows the files, when I hover my mouse over the scroll bar at the bottom the icon changes from normal to something which looks like death / the grim reaper. Same in Flash 5, but not in MS Office. I am concerned that I have a virus, but have looked through McAffee etc. Have checked what is running - found nothing. Have had a look at startup settings, and I can't find anything - I am not sure what to do next. I have no themes on the PC, and the icon settings are as default. I would be grateful if someone could explain this and let me know whether it is a real problem, and maybe give me a solution?

You say the icon settings are default? Do you mean cursor too? If not check control panel-mouse-pointers. Then choose the standard setting. You may have done this, but I wasn't sure if you meant icons or cursors.

I'm on the phone with her now and she says yes to default for the cursors.
Also the cursor changing to the grim reaper / death is now happening in MS Office! I'm answering for her because she is having trouble getting online this afternoon. Cheers Vic |

Sure sounds like a virus. If she is able to get onlin, go to http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/ and do the free virus scan.

I don't know of any virus that does this, but it would not hurt to scan the computer. There are a lot of these cursor icons out on the net and it is possible that she d/l it and did not know what she was doing. This is probable if this is an AOL user.
Go into the control panel, add/remove programs and see if you see any cursor programs. |

Or check the system task manager and see what's running.. try closing any goofy sounding apps, and see if the cursors disappear. Or check msconfig for startup tasks.

No can't find any icon programs running at all. Not an AOL user, have checked msconfig for startup tasks. Can't connect to the scan on PCcillin, and can't seem to download the trial version at the mo. Thanks for your help, but any other suggestions would be more thn welcome.

Go here:http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
You can run an "on-line" virus scan at this site. Works good.
