Has anyone built their own laptop? What case, power supply, processor, video card, etc. do you recommend? Any helpful hints? Thanks in advance!

I don't think anyone here has built a laptop. I for one do not know where to obtain the parts at decent prices. I know of no source for generic parts that will fit more than one brand. Buying replacement parts from a laptop mfgr will more than double the price.

Yeah, there is no standard (yet) for laptops yet so they all are proprietary. Plus they have onboard everything, a full size card would be way too large.

there used to be a laptop manufacturer that made their systems utilizing generic components (memory etc) called Kiwi Computers, but I have not seen hide nor hair of them in quite sometime.

You could go for the suit-case PC, but personally I get tired of seeing them. Have you seen a polished VAIO? looks awesome!

Building a laptop would be an EXTREME challenge, as Carl Price posted. I'm certified on Thinkpads as well as Dell laptops and just getting into the machine can sometimes be an experience in itself.
If you're serious about a laptop, there's only one choice....IBM Thinkpad. |
