Pooping in and thought I'd say Hi!
Hi guys ... just letting you know that I'm still around ... just not been here at the Mech due to some other priorities.
Recently, amongst other projects, I've been doing renovations [2 bathrooms ... almost done the 2nd one] ... painting, installing flooring, reinstalling toilet, etc. In doing this type of work, in some ways, it is quite similar to cooking or working with computers ... how the first time that completing any new challenges can be quite puzzling [calling on Tiretool came to mind when dealing with plumbing issues], the 2nd time being much clearer, from then on, hopefully something new will be learned in the quest to make it even better ... there are others to help out when in doubt ... if a mistake happens, it's not the end of the world ... I babble again. ![]() Greetings ... and on to the completion of never-ending tasks to be done.

Reminds me of an event around my house... never mind.
Good to see you're still kicking, Archie.

Repairs/painting/fixing things around the house is a never ending dilemma ... always love to hear your stories, Sarge. In many ways, I like doing the work but most like seeing the end results.
As for my current endeavour, the tub surround and faucet [which were installed by a professional last Sat] are done, so is the paint job which I tackled as well as most of the caulking ... In reseating the toilet, I ran into problem with leaks [minor but they have to be fixed nonetheless] at the bolts between the tank and the bowl [2 piece American Standard toilet]. It looks like the tank has to be drained again and I'm holding off on replacing the shut off valve tonight [as the main water line needs to be shut off] on a Sunday pm until tomorrow in case something goes wrong. The plan is to not use the metal washer between the bolt head and rubber washer to deal with the tank/bowl drip ... That kataksung [sp?] will be beat. BTW, ever notice that no matter what plumbing job is under way, a trip to the store for more supplies is usually needed. |

A few years ago DL wanted me to replace the toilet with a bright new one. No biggie. It didn't have a water cut-off, so turned off all the water to the house. Set the new toilet in place, went to the curb and restored the water supply. (Still no cut-off at toilet). After the bowl filled, there was a slight drip on the floor. I grabbed my socket set and began tightening the tank bowls. Oops, it cracked and fell on the floor, water running everywhere. (Still no cut-off installed) I ran to curb, DL in a panic about new carpet getting wet. Turned off the main valve. Now, times being lean, I was broke, so spent the next few days going to gas station for relief, no baths, etc. I now have a cut-off by toilet, AND DL has never asked me to be a plumber again.

That cut off valve is a must hey Sarge ... but to have to run to the curb ... yikes
Here, at the very least, I would have someone else shut it off in the basement and be standing next to the toilet ready to holler. ![]() BTW, why do your stories always seem to have so much drama!

Archie, living with DL is a daily drama, trust me. One of these days I'll start a thread on just a few of the dramas we've shared - including the time she tossed me out (well, there was more than one time
), the time I "fixed" our only car and ended up riding a bicycle to work, etc., ...the list goes on.

I know it wasn't very funny at the time sarge but it made me laugh !
I had a toilet freeze while I was gone one year then broke and leaked water into the floor and then that made another pipe freeze & break our neighbor heard water running and was smart enough to turn off my water it was too late..we had to replace 1/2 the floor and of course the toilet. After that my wife hardly ever asks me to be a plumber. (thank-god) |

Hehe, I got a better one than that:
Our bathroom faucet was dripping a little bit onto the tile floor below it. No biggie, it was a small drip. So one night late, after everyone else was in bed, I go in the bathroom. And I notice that the drip is now a puddle. So I reach under the sink to see if I can feel where the leak is. And the plastic "wingnut" that holds the tubing to the bottom of the faucet goes to pieces when my fingers touch it. So now there is water, HOT water, spraying everywhere in the bathroom. And there are no cutoff valves under the sink. So I go into the bedroom, and have to move the baby bed from in front of the closet door to get to the hot water heater, because surely there's a cutoff there. NOPE. So now there's water running out the bathroom door into the hallway, and down the hallway into the living room. So I'm shaking my husband, "get up, get up!" and he's freaking out, thinks something awful has happened. So I give him a bucket and find the flashlight and go out to the well, thinking "surely there is a cutoff there"---NOPE, it looks like there was one years ago, but all there is now is a broken off knob. So I go running back into the house, water everywhere (luckily we have no carpet in the house). And I'm thoroughly pissed by now. So I go in the bathroom, grab the tubing and bend it in half, and tie it that way with a wire tie. Problem solved. That was about 2 years ago. The tubing is still tied off under the sink. I haven't wanted to deal with putting a new handle on the cutoff by the well, draining the hot water heater, and redoing the plumbing to include cutoff valves. |

I've got a pretty good plumbing story.
In the last apartment I was in, the valve in the toilet tank wasn't working correct, and the tank wasn't filling. So, coming home one Saturday night, I saw that the tank was empty. I took off the cover to see what was wrong, but upon touching the valve it broke off, sending water straight up into the air and all over everything. I tried the shut-off valve, but it was so old that even closing it entirely did very little to stop the flow. To make this even better, the landlord was out of town that weekend, leaving no real contact person. The water ended up going through two floors below us. What a nice weekend it was! |
