miss those socket 7 motherboards

What happened to the socket 7 motherboard, there was a CPU holder that let you get a motherboard that was slow to become outdated. Think about it, a friend of mine still uses the computer system I built for him and it performs great, even compared to todays standard. Has an AMD k- 6 533Mhz CPU in there along with 3 128MB PC100 RAM sticks in it and an ATI PCI 32MB video card. You could get a motherboard and still have your choice of going with a Pentium or AMD. Now aside from that simply choice of Intel or AMD there are a few other things to think about, like slot 1, slot A, socket 370, slockets, ziffs, and then theres chipsets like VIA, Intel, SiS, ATI, I could go on listing forever. True the motherboard mentioned above was like the best of the best before the big change over, but still that system is like going on almost 4 or 5 years old, all he every had to do to it in that whole time was add some RAM and slap another hard drive on it. Anyway this is why I miss those socket 7 motherboards, and also why I consider it to be one of the all time greats. Yes there have been advancments in technology, but when you think about
SIMMs to DIMMs
socket 5 (pre 7 or whatever) to socket 7
serial to USB
these are things that made you think, man this is way better and faster, I dont mind spending extra cash to get that (what ever it was) but now what do we have? I dont feel the need to fork out the even more extra money so I can have a really, really hot cpu/computer just because it's a little faster and I dont have to use my heater in the winter. I think some of these big companys need to put more effort into things, the goal should be making a good product, not making good off a product.

Believe it or not I have a brand new MSI motherboard socket 7 ATX style. I recenty tried two different cpu's in it and posted the board. I overclocked a Pentium 100, but I accidently fried a k6 450. The board did post with the k6 but I was not using enough cooling. Good bye cpu. This MSI board is unique in that it is ATX with usb ports although it does employ the 72 pin memory (4 banks) but it does have 1 168 pin slot for sdram. I want to complete the build but I'm waiting to come across a good cheap case for it. The ones I have are simply to nice to stick this board into. Hmmmmm maybe I'll try that wooden case idea.

Yep, my very first build was a K6-III 333MHz on an FIC PA-2013 with 64MB of RAM. That's still probably my favorite board, it's how I learned about overclocking and it even survived a CPU toasting. It has a K6-II 500MHz in it now waiting to become a small file server.

Yea, I sold quite a few of those boards and when the P233MMX wasn't enough anymore, did AMD upgrades in them as a dirt cheap way to extend their life another couple years. The best part is they are all ATX, so now it's just a matter of dumping in a new board. chip, and RAM for the next upgrade.

Hey Hal how far do you think I can overclock a pentium 100 on it.
I know when I'm bored sometime I'm going to see how far I can push it with an ice pak laying on it.

Frick, it's been so long since I've dealt with that particular board, so I don't remember what the settings are like on it, but I do remember cranking a P100 to 150 once (don't remember on what kind of board).

I love Socket 7

man I love those things, I've got about half a dozen of them that people gave to me, I fixed minor probs, etc and now they're going to be a small lab up at church. I've even got one of these things in a crate.

They're great for people that don't care about speed as much. I mean, if you're an elementary kid that doesn't have a computer it means walking down the street instead of trying to get a ride to the library-- you don't care that it's a bit slower.

I've also got an old Asus that someone gave me-- once the prices on ram drop again I'm upgrading to 768 megs and 550 mhz processor it supports-- not bad for a 5 year old FREE computer. Figure I"ll take it to college w/ me and run it till it drops.

I could go on about these things forever, and I would, but people have probably already quit reading my post, so I"ll quit-- lol

As far as I know, Intel didn't like the fact that AMD chips could fit into a socket they designed for its own CPUs. "An AMD running in a socket that we made for Pentiums? No way!" So Intel changed the architecture to Slot 1 and licensed it, so no one but them could use it. AMD counterattacked with the Slot A, and so the socket war began...
