Post Do you read the manual?

Just curious how many of you read the manual (for anything), or just try to figure it out on your own.

Manual? What manual? Half the time they are wrong and then you have to rfer to the manufacturers web site for the revision.
Actually no most of the time. I read the printing on the board itself although sometimes it is necessary to refer to the manual for the proper jumper settings.

I generally use it only for reference if I get hung up on something. Normally I can't find the anwer in the manual anyway and I end up searching the web.

Might as well read thru the whole manual beforehand... Why risk the chance of missing one teeny-tiny detail that could ruin your day?... I agree that most manuals are used as a guide once you've been able to open a case and repair or replace parts...

I usually skim through it, then go back and read the details later.

Interesting, but I'm not surprised. After coming across manuals that were poorly translated, missing pages, and generic manuals that were supposed to cover 2 or 3 similar products and are so huge it's hard to find anything (I think those are the worst), I usually resort to the Internet. This site is one of my best resources, along with any tutorials I can find on the 'Net.

What manual? We don’t need no stinking manual!
For the most part I don’t read the manual unless it is something that I have ordered online and I can find a manual.

Wish I could find the manual for the wife though, bet it would be thick, hard to follow and in every language but mine.

The 3 steps.

1. Try to assemble and/or get it working.

2. When it won't work, ask at PCMechanic.

3. Read the manual when you have nothing else to do.

Only one step that I would add to this and it would be between #1 and #2 is do a search on Google then search PCMech

The only manuals I read in advance are motherboard manuals, but that's just a safeguard against quirky motherboards.

Manual? What is a manual?

Seriously, I always read them, and then bang my head against a wall because when I find out some (sometimes most) of the questions I have doesn't have answers in the stinking manual.

I always read manuals for computer related products, I guess Im paranoid I might mess up my machine.
For anything else, I never touch the manual. Its like extra packing material. Its video games, that you never read the manuals for. You just plug it in and go, if you cant figure out the controls, you ask a friend.
Just my $.02

I always read the manuals for everything. I mean, come on: it is there for a reason. I know that for some reason this puts me in the minority, but I don't know why. What gets me is that people are always amazed that I know how things work. Well, duh! I know how things work because I read the @#$*# manual.

Quote:
But even when the manuals are easy to understand, they may not be entertaining enough for today's consumer, especially younger ones who have grown up with the fast-paced world of MTV, computer games and the Internet. They are used to having information delivered in a rapid, colorful and stimulating way, and they want directions to be equally snappy.
More dumbing down of our society. If it isn't a brightly-coloured, noisy, moving object, it just isn't worth the time!

Read the manual? It depends on what I am doing. When I installed this motherboard I looked it over, held it up to the mounting plate checked the screw holes to see which ones I would be using and checked to see what back knockouts had to be removed from the case, installed all the screws and set the plate in place, everything was fine, then I checked the manual to confirm/set jumpers, installed the cables etc. and everything was ok. The manual is a Chinese translation but has plenty of pictures and a lot of info I don't even begin to understand but with it and you guys/gals I bet I can fix this thing if I have to.
For other products like my Braunfeld? grill I lay out the parts, put the seperated screws in a piece of styrofoam with a lot of compartments in it and follow the manual step by step. The manuals I hate the most are the online ones in PDF format.

I read the manual when I am stumped of there is nothing else to take into the "business office" in my house if you know what I mean.

audiyoda,
A manual is the filler they use in the big square software box so it looks like you're getting something for your money.
