kinda fishy
My gf bought a compaq laptop earlier this year. It's a Presario 705 ( I think ), although it says it's a 700 on the case. B4 buying the computer I read the specs of the computer and it's suppose to have a 1.0ghz athlon cpu. When all's said and done ( and paid ) I'll occasionally use her computer. I sometimes do alot of things so at times it would slow down, but suprising this computer seems slower than my computer which is a 500 amd k-6 so I check the cpu properties and to my surprise, It says it's 497 mhz!?!?! So... I just think I'm blind so I go back and check it again and this time it says 996mhz......hmmmm I thought, just a glitch maybe. So I'll do this periodicly and same thing happens from 497 to 675 to 996, it will go pretty random sometimes, but it's really fishy.
anyone got any ideas? thanks in advance |

This could possibly be intel speed step. but, im not sure any one else?

From what I've heard with a laptop, the CPU adjusts speed automatically to save battery life... This exact thing happens on a Micron laptop I use at work!

For a correct reading plug the laptop into the mains. As mentioned before - most laptops using Intel chips will reduce the processor speed to conserve battery life. If it still reads funny - then run some diagnostic software on it that will give you the CPU speed.

My laptop does it also and they are correct when I called tech support that is exactly what they told me.

I have a Sony laptop that will knock down the speed 100Mhz if it is running on battery, but it only has those two speed settings. It doesn't vary depending on the amount of battery left.
