My first internet experience was with a 286 and a 600 baud external modem. I was subscribed to the *original compuserve (before AOL bought it) and used the program TAPCIS - still available btw. One was charged for every minute online so TAPCIS was necessary to hold the cost down. One used it to create automated sessions online, where it could get the email, along with any new messages you wanted from subscribed forums. There was no "Internet" as such available to the public.
