Laptop

My brother-in-law wrote me an email asking for advice on a laptop recommendation. Here is his email:

"I would like a super computer. (really fast, graphics capability, CD and DVD capability). I would be using it for the office with digital photography, digital x-rays, word processing, spreadsheets, database (ie. Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Right now we just use a 56k dial up modem. It would be nice to have Quicken also. Games are not a necessity. I would like to save to a CD or DVD if possible also. I would like a laptop computer for now and maybe a desktop later. I hope this helps."

I told him the Dell Inspiron 8200 is a good choice, my friend just got one and likes it. What do you guys think? Any recommendations on a scanner? It sounds like he may need one with the x-rays.

How large are the transparencies that have to be scanned? I have a customer that's a dentist and they have to scan 5x7 xrays, and their software company recommended a BenQ (Acer) - it's affordable and it works but support is terrible. We upgraded them from Win98 to Win2k and had to scrounge around for a beta driver for a different scanner to get the stupid thing working.
