Car Speakers
Got an am/fm radio with cassette player given me by a guy who took it out of his boat. Figured I'd stick it in my Bug and was wondering about speakers. Do I get 8 ohm speakers and how would ohm rating effect things if I used 4 speakers? I don't want a Bug with a "rappin'" stereo system, just something to listen to. The radio has a front/rear and left/right selection so must can handle 4 speakers.

Any old speakers designed for a car will do. 8 ohm will be safe, 4 ohm would probably be OK too. For just something to listen to, 2 speakers will be easier to install than 4.

For most all stock type car audio systems you will want to use 4 ohm speakers.

Hell, go to Wal-Mart and get a set of cheap 6x9's. More than enough for just regular listening.

Crutchfield is not really overpriced unless you're used to buying cheap components that will fall on their faces when put under a load. When I put a stereo system in my '85 Mustang years ago, I went with a Rockford Fosgate Punch 75 amp. At that time it was a $340 amp. It seemed high at the time but it's still working today (14 years later). You won't see most of the so-called "high power" amps that you find in magazines like J.C. Whitney and such lasting anywhere near that long unless you get lucky. Anytime I see an add that says something like "1000 Watt amp, only $75" I look the other way cuz it's crap.
As for going to Wal-Mart to get a set of speakers, that's not such a bad idea unless your Wally World is different from ours around here. They sell Pioneer and Sony speakers and they work fine for normal listening. Just don't grab the first $10 set of Roadmaster's or Audiovox's you see though.

I'm thinking that a $10 set of Audiovoxes will be just fine for what Sarge wants to use them for.

![]() Sarge > You could probably just do like glc suggested at the top of this thread and go with 4 ohms. If you decide to go with 4 speakers instead of two though, check to see how many outputs the stereo has. If it has 4 speaker outs, then a 4 ohm speaker on each lead should work fine. If it only has two though, you'll have to hook two speakers in parallel on each lead so you'd want to start with 8 ohm speakers (two 8 ohm speakers in parallel equals a total of a 4 ohm load for each lead). |

Does anyone have a funny image of Sarge listening to some 50-cents pound hard in his VW as he pulls up next to a Soccer Mom in an SUV at a stop-light in their head?
