A Feller & Old Movies

Seems nowadays the movies just ain't the same as olden years. glc knows what I'm referring to. Today they come and go and nobody remembers. Next week another comes out and another 2 hours wasted. I think the storylines or something have escaped modern day film guys. An obvious validation of the olden movies from glc's days are that they are still being reran on TV. I choose the old John Wayne movies for an example. Good guys versus bad, good guy gets the gal, and beautiful scenery. John Ford was known for his fantastic scenes. A recent customer of mine worked with him back yonder. He said they would wait half a day because John Ford said, "when those clouds get right there, I want to see 100 Indians ride up on the hill".

Classics like Gone With The Wind are indeed that; longevity has proven it. I can't think of any movie made in the past many moons that would have the same permanence. Perhaps when the older generation passes on they will cease replaying the oldsters. One can never deny the quality of the olden movies versus the modern ones. The yonkers seem disinterested in them, but they are missing an opportunity.

Lol, even though I'm not old enough to have seen those classics when they first appeared, I enjoy watching them.

Yeah, I hardly go to see a movie in the theaters. Half of the time they're just ...stupid.

I like to see all of those old classics on A&E and AMC, plus all the old TV shows on TV land.

I think modern movies are mainly geared toward special FX. I remember one director saying "The story is the plot, not the special effects." (or words to that effect). I kind of think that's what's happening; film makers are forgetting about the plot and showing a lot of what they spent the most money on: special effects.

I remember the classics. Part of the thrill for me was the atmosphere of the theatre. You weren't cooped up in a cubicle. People had some respect for their fellow theatre goers.
On the other hand, I have viewed some very well done and entertaining movies over last several years, all from the comfort of my home.

Only movie Ive been into lately is the Lord Of the Rings . Brilliant piece of work. I would tend to agree with the Sarge about todays movies only being geered towards the youth that blow their cash like it grew on trees. Movies like Spiderman , Daredevil ,Scream and teen movies in general are just crap. What we need is more "Apocalyspe Now's" "Godfathers's" "Scarface's" "Willie Wonka and the chocolate factory's"? 'A space odyssey ,Slapshot, ET, STARWARS, etc etc

cheers

I dont really think you can blame it on the director or the people writing the movies...I blame it on the certain level of the down syndrome that our generation has, I consider myself to be part of the generation your referring to...The only actual good movies with good plots I can really think of is Star Wars(4-6, not the new ones, they suck), The Matrix(I know its a new one, but come on, the plot isa good!)...but when you ask some people about the Matrix, all they can think about is how it was soo cool when they made the camera do the circle thing...Or how some say Austin Powers is the best movie of all time...

But I do see what your saying, but it aint all their fault, most are just very fickle, and dont like to think...I dont think the oldies will ever die though...John Wayne can never die...even and FX junkie like me can sit down and watch an old John Wayne movie

EDIT: Come on Propaine, you cant call ET a classic, that movie is sooo boring...you can only see it one time, then its just slow and dull...I think Spieldberg gets way too much credit for that flick...

I like the classics. 12 Angry Men has got to be my favorite of them all.

The love stories...especially Gone with the Wind, are a waste of the nitrogen and carbon on the film. So sappy they are sickening...

Some movies today I am convinced that they first figure out what kind of special effects will be in them, then they alter the story to include that scene. This makes for special effects that are visually great but totally against any laws of physics. The public seems to be quite forgiving because the action is great.

I too tend to prefer old movies. 12 angry men is a great one but I think my favorite is probably Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

While there are lot of modern movies that don't even come close to the classics (old movies), there are plenty of good modern day movies. The only problem is you have to sift through the bad ones to get to good ones.

I find Kevin Smith's movies particularly funny (Clerks, Mallrats, etc..), Lord of the Rings, Monster's Ball, In the Bedroom, One Hour Photo, Dead Poet's Society, Good Will Hunting, Insomnia, Road to Perdition, The Green Mile, Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, and on and on. There are plenty of good modern day movies, is just there are also a lot of bad modern movies as well.

I agree with Strider there are plenty of good movies. The problem is all the crap we get in between. there were plenty of bad movies back then too but we choose to remember the best ones. In twenty years we will probably look back and be saying the same things about movies from this generation.
