Thought I`ve seen everything!!

Just wanted to throw this out. I was asked to look at a womans PC. She said she couldn`t even "get to her screen".

She *was* running W98-SE and said her son tried to install some graphics software and after that is when the OS failed to load. Assuming it was a bad app install I fired it up to see what was what. After the post I got a boot manager giving me the option to choose my OS, and the only OS available was RedHat Linux!! Which also turned out to be a bad install.

One of her sons friends gave him the disk and said this was better for graphics. He apparently ran the disk and clicked his way through. When I mentioned that Linux is a separate OS from Windows, I may as well have been speaking Chinese.

Yes, I think there will always be a need for "computer guys\gals". Needless to say a re-install of W98 was in order...

Are you sure that there isnt a multi-boot in there with windows, and somehow the windows option might have been removed?

I booted to a floppy and ran fdisk and it showed 3 non DOS partitions. (10G drive) One 9 and change GIGs and 2 smaller. I mean a lot smaller, just a few megs. They also told me the OS hasn`t been re-installed since new. (Gateway)

I don`t know anything about Linux. Boot partitions maybe?? No idea.

She did however run regular backups of her QuickBooks so the reinstall turned out to be the most cost effective course of action.
