UMAX Rant!
Never will I deal with a POS Umax again. Had a customer buy a new computer with XP Home on it. She gets her new system home and tries to install her UMAX Astra 3400. No go... so she phones me for help. I do a bit of searching only to find that you need updated software to be compatable with XP. Here's where the fun begins.
1) Order her the new software... I mark it up... costs her $29.95 2) She installs the new software... software still doesn't detect the scanner. 3) Brings it back for me to setup 4) I dig around and find out there is a patch that you have to download for XP..... wait a minute... isn't that what the software puchased was for... to be compatable with XP???? 5) Sigh... ok... download and install patch. 6) Scanner still doesn't work. 7) Search disk for updated drivers... none found... but find a document that tells me what to do WHEN the scanner doesn't work as by default... it still wont. 8) Go into device manager.... update driver... select that you will select from a list of drivers. 9) Shows as compatable drivers, the installed UMAX Astra 3400 and USB Scanner. Select USB Scanner. 10) Get error that it is not digitally signed... continue anyway. 11) OK all the way out.... scanner works. POS I tell ya... POS!!!

I would care if I were purchasing them for myself... but I made a few bucks doing the transaction.

My very old UMAX 1200P parallel port scanner works fine with XP Home, didn't have to fiddle with new drivers or anything. I guess I am the exception.

I wouldn't buy a UMAX again. Good scanner but I am not going to pay for an upgrade.

Umax used to be the leader in low price scanners - no more. Even Visioneer has better support now.

We have a Umax PowerLook 2100XL scanner that's used for high-end graphics work. Cost is about $1200.00. Great scanner, but I agree with Hal, Umax's support sucks big time.
