Attention to admins and mods, a question

I run a message board with a friend of mine and we have mostly people from our school post on it. However, we get visitors to our site that don't really like our censorship of vulgarity and stuff (we run it kind of like you do here). Basically, my question is, how do you ban users with dynamic IP's? There's a person who keeps disrupting our board, but we can't ban him because he has a dynamic IP address. Suggestions greatly welcomed.

some times you have to block an entire IP range like 65.242.23.001 to 65.242.23.255.

You may want to contact the ISP that owns the IP and report him to the abuse department, they would be able to determine who had the IP at a certain time.

There are ways around a full IP range block, but will they go through the trouble?

Yea, I know who it is personally, but he just won't stop being annoying because he wants a completely uncensored message board. However, he doesn't understand the concept of who is paying for the webspace/bandwidth. By blocking an IP range, I didn't know of that would ban other users of that ISP as well?

Blocking an entire range would block all users from that particular ISP wouldnt it? I guess you could try it for a week, let him take a hint and then unblock it when its no longer a problem

Hmm, blocking him by Mac address would be a neat idea if it is possible, I have not seen websites that record the Mac address of a PC but I assume it is totally possible.

If done right and he was blocked that way he wouldn't know what hit him.

If he is not paying for the site and you are it is up to you and other owners of the site how it is to be run and if he can't follow the rules, punt him out like you want.

If he don't like the set up that has been put in place, tell him the exit is in the Upper right Corner of his screen.

I just did some searching on google, I don't think right off blocking by his Mac address is to likely.

In could be possible in theory but Does not look to be very likely.

Just delete every post he makes as soon as you see them. I don't think you can read out and block a MAC address.

However, blocking the last Octet might block users he wants to allow access.

I think trying to block the last octet for a while is the best way he has.

If you block the last Octet he and others in that IP range should be able to read it, so I would add a post or link
Having problems, click here and have a short form for them to fill out asking for their IP address as one of the questions.
You would then get an idea of how many people are having problems based on blocking the range.

Yea, I attempted talking to him with so much leniency, but that did not work. Right now all I can do is delete his posts if I can figure out what user name he is using. He just keeps making new ones. yargh!

Delete all vulgar posts. The people you want to have around won't be affected, right?

How old is he? Why not report him to his parents. I had a similar problem. I wrote a letter which shows what he's been posting. I sent copies to his ISP, to his College Advisor, School Dean, Parents, Grandparents, and even to his bank. I never saw the kid again

The problem with banning blocks of IPs is you also potentially ban other people from the same ISP.

If someone is that persistant you can always turn off registration for awhile, we've done that before, temporarily of course .

haha, no, but if i start getting people to go there I know several people who would do that.

You might try and change his pw in admin options, just to mess with him...

I wonder how much longer it will be until you require a passport or certificat to register at websites. If you did it that way, you could use the certificate and all the personal info could be looked up without the person filling out stupid forms on webpages.
