Best Christmas Gift Ever

Yesterday I received the best Christmas gift ever. My son and his family came to visit. We passed out gifts, and took lots of pictures of the little ones opening them. Little Gabby (age 2) kept calling for us to open "MORE....MORE." We had a great time. When it came time for Grandpa to open his present, Ashley (the older granddaughter in my avatar) announced that my present had a big red bow and was in the back of their van. She grabbed my hand and out we went. My son lifted the rear door and there under a big red bow was a stack of lumber. My son had a big smile on his face. "Dad" he said, "You have been talking about finishing your basement. Well, instead of hiring it done, I thought you and I might want to tackle the job. This is the first stack of 2X4s." Folks, my son, age 35, with a wonderful wife, a family of his own, and a busy schedule, has offered me the most precious gift ever, his time, time to be spent with his dad, working together.

It might take several weeks or, if we are lucky, several months, but finishing the basement will let us build memories that will last the rest of our lives. The best part is that I didn't have to ask. It was his idea.

Anybody else receive a gift that good?

You DID make my eyes water, CH. Nothing better than having that kind of relationship with your son. Thanx for sharing.

I gave a gift similar. Not nearly as great but it will be fun. My dad and I used to sit infornt of an old 20in tv and play atari when I was five. I gave him that atari tv plug in joy stick with the pre programed games for x-mas. I told him that I would be up to his house for his 50th b-day to help him enjoy it since i couldn't be there for christmas. Whats really amazing is that since i joined the military, started a family, and am doing well financally my dad has started to like me and be able to talk to me. I can finally start building on teh childhood memories again. And he finally acknowledged my computer skills and will let me fix his computer.

That's a great gift! I hope you enjoy the time together.

For my dad's b-day I'm giving him a 350 big block for his '70 Lemans. It currently has a straight 6. I imagine we'll spend a few good weekends together on that.
