Question Media players comparison

I'm not sure anyone notice this, but when playing mpeg, avi, divx etc on media players. I notice that DIVX is far supperior to WMP9-for the same type of file. WMP9 seems chunky, DIVX(v2.5) seem smoother. I have not done any other comparisons yet, hope anyone is willing to do with other players
Why does this happen anyway? I thought that same codec, different players mean nothing.
I know how to change the default player to DIVX, but how to make sure that DIVX takes over WMP-in playing all the file types. Currently I use these programs:
quick time - have to use it for the format
winamp 5 - mp3
WMP 9 - all type of media & for playing CD
DIVX - nothing yet.
I want DIVX plays all movies and WMP9 only for audio CD's. Thanks
Is there a better player (quality of video) than DIVX? Thanks

Personally, I use WA5 for everything I can, and divx for anything WA5 won't play. *except for windows media files which turned out blue on WA- this problem might actually be fixed by now.

I have never noticed a difference between WMP9 and DIVX. I use WMP9 for everything except Quicktime and Real Player formats. ( I wish there was an alternative to Quicktime and Real Player)

I wish for some open source to make a universal player-taking the best from each player. Makes my life easier
