how hard is it to fine a CPU fan???

Yeserday My CPU fan started making very bad nosie and it was clear it was about to fail.

I jumped in my car and drove to Compusa(about 20 miles).

They only had CPU fans for 600 mhz and smaller or the new 64 Bit intel and AMD processors.

So I drove over to BEST BUY and they had Zero CPU fans.

At both places I even ask at the service counter.

Had I been just a novice computer user and had took my PC to be repaired for that nosie it would have been 3 days before they had replacement CPU fans, can you believe that.

I found it hard to believe that they would run out of such important items.

Myself, I refused to let either place order me a fan, decided I could just get one from New Egg just about as fast.

In the mean time, I connected an 80mm Case Fan to my Heat Sink. I don't recommend this mod and just for info, CPU temps are running up to 2 degrees celsius cooler.

However I will be glad to go back to a standard heatsink fan and undo the mod I have in operation.

I placed my newegg order this morning and it shipped today. I knew I could count on fast shipment with newegg.

I honestly didn't feel like shopping around a whole lot for a CPU fast after I could NOT buy one local, so I just went with a reliable company.

I have an 80mm fan on my heatsink, but the fan only runs at like 2600RPM. I though 80mm was standard? It's not?

80mm is only standard on premium HSF's. The stock Intel P4 is 70mm and I *think* stock AMD is 60mm. My P3 Slot 1 retail is a huge 40mm and Socket 370's are 60mm.

My stock AMD fan is 60mm, I don't know if that's the standard for all of them though

Another good place to find fans is http://www.casecooler.com --> for fans, I like them as well as NewEgg. Their price on the Panaflo's is good, and they ship inexpensively (especially if you are ordering several). Not quite as fast to your door as NewEgg, though [After all, that's one of the ways NewEgg got to be King of the Hill]

Ok, I just got my CPU replacement fan and heatsink from newegg.

I replaced a 60mm fan and aluminum heatsink with a 60mm fan and Pure Copper heatsink.

Both heatsinks are the same size.

With the aluminum heatsink idle CPU temp was 50c, up to about 57c with a load in a room about 25c.

With the new copper heatsink idle cpue temp is 41c, max load I have seen on it so far tonight had a temp of 46c.

My processor is the XP 1700+ PALOMINO core. this core is known for being a heat source. So I have to say for this core I am happy with the new temps.

When I say a load, i am talking about the seti @ home program running at full for about 30 minutes, since it will use near max CPU and you can watch the temps go up with Distributed Computer programs.
