DVD Burning problem

Hey all,

I like to make backup copies of the DVD's that I have at home. Recenly I purchased a Lite On 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 40X CD-R, 24X CD-RW, 12X DVD-ROM, and 40XCD-ROM .

I use a program called DVDSHRINK which makes the DVD fit onto one DVD-R. I use Nero 6 to burn the files onto the disk.

We have a surround sound system connected to one of our DVD players(Toshiba and Phillips)

When I watch the movie, sometimes the movie would freeze and skip over a lot of minutes of the movie. As the freezing would occur, I would see "Pro Logic" and "Digital" blinking on the DVD player display, aswell as blinking of the speakers that are providing the sound.

The DVD-R's that I use are Fujifilm 4.7 GB/120 min DVD+R.

I am wondering what is happening here. This happens on both players and even if I have the surround sound system turned off(or even no sound at all)

When I make the backup copy, the original copy is in like perfect condition.

Am I burning wrong? My uncle suggested DVD Shrink and use it with Nero 6, so I have, because it worked for him, so I dont know what I am doing wrong

It only freezes once in a while, but it gets annoying when trying to watch the whole movie.

If anybody knows the solution, please let me know. Thanks!

Maybe I am burning it wrong..some say I should use DVD Decrypter then DVD shrink or just DVD Decrypter? I don't know what I should do...help

Hi,

skipping is usually a sign of bad media, or bad burning (or both).
DVDShrink does its job well. Nero 6 however had alot of bugs when it came out. I don't know which version of Nero 6 you have, but if you have an earlier version I think that's the problem.

First I suggest that you download DVDInfo and get the media code, so we can see what media code it is. If it's a bad one, you need to get other media.

Then I'd download the latest Nero update or even try Nero 5.5.10.42 for burning (5.5.10.42 is said as one of the best Nero versions for DVD burning).

And make sure that you burn the DVD+R's with DVD-ROM bitsetting. For that, check the checkbox "DVD-ROM booktype" on the "burn" tab of Nero. You can use DVDInfo to check the booktype of the DVD+R after burning.

The Media Code is RICOHJPNR01.

I do not see DVD-ROM booktype in the burn tab.

DVD INFO shows book type as DVD+R.

I have NERO 6. How would I get 5.5.10.42? Would I need to download this update?

the first one

Ricoh dye ... one of the best. IMHO the best. I haven't had anything better yet. So your media is fine.

Well, with my Nero 5.5.10.42 I only get the checkbox when no media is inserted. So what I do is launch Nero, create my DVD, and click on the burn button. Then Nero asks me to insert a blank media, after that I insert it.
When I already have the blank in, for some reason Nero won't display the checkbox.

If you still get no checkbox, you can use DVDInfo to program your drive to burn DVD+R's with DVD-ROM booktype, then you don't need to worry about Nero's checkbox.
Or download the bitsetter from here: http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=0&sid=2&aid=44
That's the one I used with older versions of Nero that couldn't change the booktype.

Says I need disk loaded in order to change boot type. Would I put in a blank media or the actual DVD? What would I change the DVD boot type to? Thanks

Nevermind..gonna use the program to do it for me..

Do I have to put in a blank media? What do I choose? DVD-ROM spec for "Set for current disk"? "Set drive for DVD-R discs?" Thanks

The first link is to a newer version of Nero 5.5. I don't know if it works, but on this page there are links to get 5.5.10.42

http://club.cdfreaks.com/lite/t-76711

What program are you using to change the booktype ? DVDInfo or the other one ?
As I haven't used DVDInfo for booktype change I can tell you how to use the DVD Bitsetter. You don't need a disc in the drive.
Launch DVD Bitsetter and make sure that your burner is selected on the top left dropdown list.
On the right side, click on "DVD-ROM specification" and then on the "Set drive for DVD+R discs" button.
You can check the settings by clicking on the "Check settings" button on the left side.

I think I need to download the firmware update , as it says that it does not detect my burner.

It says this when I try to click on "Check settings"

"Unable to open Drive E:"

I don't know if it detects my burner or what, but all I can do is pull up E:\ .. it does not say the actual name of the DVD burner.

then when I try to change bit type, it says "failed to change bitsettings. Either you have deleted the wrong drive or you have a incompatabible one(Sony drives)

I am about ready to give up..I had trouble installing the version you gave me, said something about my registration or something, so I had to uninstall NERO and install NERO 6..So I am just gonna use NERO 6 and possibly fool around with the boot type

also how are you burning the dvd's?

are you just burning them or burning them and surfing or playing games?

usually burning dvd's uses alot of memory so you'll want to that only used by the software.....

try just doing that (only burning) if you have dsl...unplug it and start from a fresh boot...that way your pc isn't sending and receiving any info that might pass thru the memory...

I do this myself and it works for me....as I was having the same problems and turned out the dsl was causing the glitches.....you'll also want to have very few aps running when you do this....so if you have dsl and it's unpluged just make sure to turn off you anti-virus and firewall (make sure your not on the net before you do that)

Checked my DVDBitSetter again, and it displays the drive's name only if "Disable usage of the ASPI drivers" is not checked.

But I could be that the drive needs a firmware update. I know LiteOn once had a DVD burner out that didn't support bitsetting out of the box and was added later by a firmware upgrade. I though this was long time ago, but maybe this is now why you're having problems to change the booktype.

Note that it's BOOK type - not boot type.

Disable Usage of the ASPI drivers is grayed out

On the bottom it says Not Using ASPI driver

Will I need to download the ASPI driver? If so, where and what is an ASPI driver?

Also, where can I get the latest firmware update for my model? The model number is SOHW-812S

Firmware revision is US05

I usually go upstairs when I burn the DVD's, but sometimes I talk on AIM and IRC. I dont know if that is a good idea.

I'll disable as many application as I can next time I burn . Thanks

Thank you for all your help

You can get the newest firmware, US0J, from the LiteOn website:

http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm

I don't know how old the US05 firmware is, but support for booktype change was added with the US0A firmware. So it could be that your firmware does not support booktype change. The upgrade to US0A or higher (US0J being the newest) should fix that.
Also LiteOn has its own tool for changing the booktype, you might want to try that, too.

Know where I could get that tool RJ?

Even with the firmware update, it does not like me change what I want to change..I think I am gonna need the utility from lite- on

found the update..gonna install it and change the setting

Do I have to change this each time I burn or what? it seems like it is asking me to insert media and then changing it..not sure if it's a one time change thing
