Driver problem

I have a Gigabyte Radeon 9200. I curently have Catalyst 3.6 drivers installed [very old, I know]. I have tried installing every driver release since then but they all lag on the desktop to the point where it is unbearable and I end up reinstalling the 3.6s. The desktop lags horrible. If I move a window, it takes about a second and then the window jumps to where I wanted it to go while creating major lag. This is the same for the menus. Whenever I open a menu it lags. Games and movies play without any lag, however. I would like to keep up with current drivers, but I can't with all this lag.

FIC VI13 mobo
P4 2.4b
Gigabyte ATI Radeon 9200
512MB DDR ram

Do you *completely* remove the previous driver build before you update?

I had similar problems with the 3.5's quite some time ago. That's when I made the switch to Omega's modded ATI drivers. Been using them ever since. He tends to correct the ATI bugs in his revisions. If you decide to give them a try, just be sure to follow his instruction to remove the ATI control panel from your system prior to installing Omega's drivers.
